  1. 6. Formation of Composite Islet Grafts : A novel strategy to promote islet survival and revascularization

    Author : Ulrika Johansson; Peetra Magnusson; Korsgren Olle; Bo Nilsson; Federico Bertuzzi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Islet of Langerhans; cytokines and cytokinereceptors expression; endothelial cells; mesenchymal stromal cells; transplantation; revascularization; Clinical immunology; Klinisk immunologi; cellforskning; cellforskning;

    Abstract : The islets of Langerhans are small and delicate spheroid organs scattered in the pancreas responsible for insulin production. Transplantation of isolated islets is a beneficial therapy for patients with a severe form of type 1 diabetes. READ MORE

  2. 7. The Impact of Pancreatic Islet Vascular Heterogeneity on Beta Cell Function and Disease

    Author : Sara Ullsten; Per-Ola Carlsson; Joey Lau; Sara Bohman; Rebecca L. Hull; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Pancreatic islets; heterogeneity; islet vascularity; blood flow; islet transplantation; islet amyloid; insulitis; type 1 diabetes; beta cell proliferation; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Diabetes Mellitus is a group of complex and heterogeneous metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia. Even though the condition has been extensively studied, its causes and complex pathologies are still not fully understood. The occurring damage to the pancreatic islets is strikingly heterogeneous. Abstract : Islet transplantation has found its niche in diabetes treatment. It has contributed to a better quality of life and better glycemic control of patients with diabetes suffering from severe hypoglycemia that are not eligible for vascularized pancreas transplantation. Islet isolation is a technically challenging procedure. READ MORE

  4. 9. Islet amyloid polypeptide : Perspectives on the storage and plasma concentration of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) in rodent models of obesity and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and aspects of amyloidogenesis andelimination of IAPP

    Author : Arnold Leckström; Sture Falkmer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The present study was aimed to investigate plasma concentrations and pancreatic storage of IAPP in relation to that of insulin in four different animal models with hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, obesity and/or NIDDM. The NMRI mice fed a high-fat diet for six months, the Psammomys on high-energy (HE) diet and the genetically obese (ob/ob) mice studied for one year all revealed significantly elevated plasma IAPP concentrations, while the IAPP levels were unchanged in the spontaneously diabetic GK rats during a glucose tolerance test. 5. 10. Standardization of Islet Isolation and Transplantation Variables

    Author : Andrew S Friberg; Olle Korsgren; Daniel Brandhorst; Paul R. V. Johnson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Islet isolation; standardization; enzyme; gradient separation; digital imaging analysis; DIA; transplantation outcome; islet transplantation; prediction; Medical technology; Medicinsk teknik; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi; Computerized Image Processing; Datoriserad bildbehandling;

    Abstract : Currently, the transplantation of islets of Langerhans is a viable means to maintain control of blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of hypoglycemia in defined populations with brittle type I diabetes mellitus or those requiring pancreatectomy. However, the process of islet isolation is highly variable and not all isolations result in islet numbers or quality suitable for transplantation. READ MORE
