  1. 11. Identification and characterization of progenitor populations in the human adult heart

    Author : Joakim Sandstedt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cardiac progenitor cells; heart; C-kit; Side Population; Stage Specific Embryonic Antigens; FACS;

    Abstract : Traditionally, the heart has been regarded as a non-regenerative organ. During the last 10 years, this notion has been challenged. By 14C measurements, it was calculated that at the age of 50, about 45% of all cardiomyocytes had formed after birth. READ MORE

  2. 12. Genetic structuring in natural populations - the influence of life history strategies and asymmetric migration

    Author : Lisa Sundqvist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Population genetics; Asymmetric migration; Genetic differentiation; Resting stages; Gene flow; Phytoplankton; Macroalgae;

    Abstract : In this thesis I investigate aspects of genetic differentiation and factors influencing the structure of populations. This is done with a special focus on life histories and dispersal strategies common in the marine environment. READ MORE

  3. 13. Conservation biology and genetic structure of fringe populations of the scarce heath butterfly in Sweden

    Author : Anna Cassel; Volker Loeschcke; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; fragmentation; genetic structure; mobility; inbreeding; habitat requirements; Lepidoptera; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Conservation Biology; naturvårdsbiologi;

    Abstract : During the past century, about 82% of meadows and pastures have been lost in Sweden, with negative consequences for their flora and fauna. An example is the scarce heath butterfly, which is one of the red-listed species threatened by such habitat loss through afforestation. READ MORE

  4. 14. Genetic variation in two closely related salmonids, brown trout (Salmo trutta) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) : a comparison of variability patterns and some management considerations

    Author : Gunnar Ståhl; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Within the Salmonidae, a wide range of intraspecific variation, both morphological and ecological, has long been recognized. In the present study electrophoresis was used to examine natural populations of brown trout (Salmo trutta) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo solar) in northern Sweden in an effort to reveal the genetic structure of these populations. 5. 15. Ecological genetics of inbreeding, outbreeding and immunocompetence in Ranid frogs

    Author : Jörgen Sagvik; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Using artificial fertilization, I crossed frogs from different populations to evaluate fitness consequences for the offspring from an inbreeding-outbreeding perspective, and to evaluate quantitative genetic effects on immunocompetence against a fungal pathogen (Saprolegnia). Crosses between closely situated populations of different sizes generated contrasting results for the effects of outbreeding on offspring traits between populations and life history stages, emphasizing the importance of epistatic effects and the difficulties of relying on generalizations when making conservation decisions (e.
