  1. 21. Population Genetic Analyses of Natal Dispersal and Substructure in Three Bird Species

    Author : Tobias Sahlman; Jan Ekman; Jacob Höglund; Ben J. Hatchwell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Ecology; Perisoreus infaustus; Gallinago media; Lagopus muta; relatedness; philopatry; biased dispersal; phylogeography; microsatellite; mitochondrial DNA; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Genetic variation within and among populations is a result of past and ongoing processes. Among the most important of such processes are dispersal, habitat fragmentation and selection. This thesis use neutral genetic variation as a tool to investigate these processes in three bird species. READ MORE

  2. 22. Population History and Non-invasive Monitoring : Use of low copy number DNA in Conservation Genetics

    Author : Øystein Flagstad; Ettore Randi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; genetic tagging; immigration; loss of genetic variability; non-invasive molecular techniques; population decline; Swayne’s hartebeest; wolf; wolverine; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : Conservation genetics research is increasingly becoming an integrated part of the management of small and endangered populations. In this thesis I developed tools for genetic analysis of low copy number sources of DNA, such as old teeth from museum specimens as well as field-collected faeces and urine. READ MORE

  3. 23. Crossing barriers: Genetic consequences of translocating wild cleaner fish for aquaculture

    Author : Ellika Faust; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; conservation genetics; population genetics; aquaculture escapee; hybridisation; corkwing wrasse; lumpfish; cleaner fish translocation; sea lice; range expansion; fishery management;

    Abstract : Several species of fish show a symbiotic cleaning behaviour, where they assist other species by feeding and removing dead skin or ectoparasites. Some of these cleaner fish species are used as a low-cost parasite control in salmon aquaculture, often considered to be more environmentally friendly than other delousing methods. READ MORE

  4. 24. Morphometric differentiation in Papaver radicatum (Papaveraceae) : Geographic pattern and significance for refugial survival theory

    Author : Eva Selin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Capsule morphology; Geographic pattern; Leaf morphology; Morphometric variation; Papaver radicatum; Refugial survival; Seed shape; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : The morphometric pattern of variation among and within Scandinavian populations of the alpine species Papaver radicatum was studied. Results from analyses (including multivariate techniques) of capsule and leaf traits of wild-collected and cultivated plants as well as wild-collected seeds show correlated patterns of variation in capsule traits and partly corresponding patterns of variation between capsule and seed traits. 5. 25. A Phytoplankton Invasion: Population Genetics, Phylogeography, and Invasion Success of Gonyostomum semen

    Author : Karen Lebret; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : nvasive species is a major threat to ecosystems and biodiversity. Invasions by macroorganisms have been intensively studied, but little is known concerning microbial invasions. In aquatic environments, phytoplankton, i.e. READ MORE
