6. Studies of Hydrogenations and Isomerizations of Olefins and Alkylations of Amines Using Iridium Catalysts
Abstract : This thesis describes three types of reactions that were carried out using iridium catalysts. The first type is the iridium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of olefins. In paper I, the preparation of a new type of bicyclic thiazole-phosphine based iridium complex was described. READ MORE

7. Ruthenium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation
Abstract : This thesis covers the development of two new methods for the asymmetric reduction of ketones and ketone intermediates. The protocols developed are based on the use of a ruthenium pseudo-dipeptide catalyst that previously has been shown to be efficient and selective in the asymmetric reduction of carbonyl compounds. 8. Enols and Allylic Alcohols as Building Blocks in Synthetic Organic Chemistry : Experimental and Theoretical Studies
Abstract : The present thesis describes computational and experimental studies used to drive the reactivity of allylic and enol substrates towards new transformations. These synthetic methods give access to a number of organic molecules that may serve as important moieties in synthetic organic chemistry. READ MORE

9. Quantum Chemical Studies of Protein-Bound Chromophores, UV-Light Induced DNA Damages, and Lignin Formation
Abstract : Quantum chemical methods have been used to provide a better understanding of the photochemistry of astaxanthin and phytochromobilin; the photoenzymic repair of UV-light induced DNA damages; and the formation of lignin. The carotenoid astaxanthin (AXT) is responsible for the colouration of lobster shell. READ MORE

10. Structure and Dynamics of Core-Excited Species
Abstract : In this thesis we have performed core-electron spectroscopy studies of gas phase molecular systems starting with smaller diatomic, continuing with triatomic and extending our research to more complex polyatomic ones. We can subdivide the results presented here into two categories: the first one focusing on electronic fine structure and effect of the chemical bonds on molecular core-levels and the other one dealing with nuclear dynamics induced by creation of a core hole.
