21. Human Fetal Hemoglobin : Biochemical Characterization and Recombinant Production
Abstract : Blood transfusion is a common medical procedure when oxygen supply in the body is impaired. However, blood transfusion is not always without risks. The uncontrolled spreading of blood borne pathogens such as HIV or hepatitis B and C virus has urged researchers to look for “blood substitutes”. READ MORE

22. RNA in model lipid membranes - interactions in bulk and at surfaces
Abstract : The work presented in the thesis “RNA in model lipid membranes- interactions in bulk and at surfaces” aims to characterize the interaction between RNA and model membranes with different properties as well as to determine if ssRNA associate with model membranes in different ways. Several techniques have been used to characterize these systems, including quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), Langmuir film balance in combination with neutron reflectometry and fluorescence microscopy as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). 23. Bilayer Discs - Fundamental Investigations and Applications of Nanosized Membrane Models
Abstract : The bilayer disc is a flat, lipid aggregate structure in the nanometre regime. It is composed of a bilayer of amphiphilic molecules with micelle-forming amphiphilic molecules supporting the rim, which prevent disc fusion and self-closure. READ MORE

24. Life will find a way : Structural and evolutionary insights into FusB and HisA
Abstract : How do microbes adapt to challenges from the environment? In this thesis, two distinct cases were examined through structural and biochemical methods. In the first, we followed a real-time protein evolution of HisA to a novel function. The second case was fusidic acid (FA) resistance mediated by the protein FusB in Staphylococcus aureus. READ MORE

25. Of spiders, bugs, and men : Structural and functional studies of proteins involved in assembly
Abstract : Protein assembly enables complex machineries while being economical with genetic information. However, protein assembly also constitutes a potential threat to the host, and needs to be carefully regulated.Sulfate is a common source of sulfur for cysteine synthesis in bacteria. READ MORE
