11. Justice for children? : A socio-legal study on Colombia’s responses to children associated with armed violence
Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to examine how criminal justice policy practices arose and persist in light of the international victim-centred legal framework for children associated with armed groups. The study explores the gaps between how children are treated in law versus empirical practices of criminalisation in a particular domestic setting (Colombia), which has been riddled by internal armed conflict and hybrid forms of violence. Abstract : The compilation dissertation is shaped by the ambition of Critical Theory, which is to imagine an alternative and emancipatory political reality to the status quo, where people who have been subjected to sexual violence are recognised and enjoy parity of participation in social life. More specifically, it aims to understand how victim-survivors of sexual violence in Iceland perceive, experience, and understand justice; and how, in a Nordic socio-legal context, this knowledge can be used to expand and develop strategies which are capable of meeting the justice interests of victim-survivors within and outside of the criminal justice system. 13. On Science, Law, and Medicine : The case of gender-“normalizing” interventions on children who are diagnosed as different in sex development
Abstract : For the last six decades in Sweden and the US, surgical and other medical interventions have been utilized to reconstruct and “normalize” children diagnosed as different in their sex development. Under traditional treatment protocols, clinicians chose an “optimal” gender for the children and used different procedures to give them a typical appearance for that gender – aspiring to support them psychologically – and to facilitate penile-vaginal intercourse. 14. Global Warming and Our Natural Duties of Justice : A cosmopolitan political conception of justice
Abstract : Compelling research in international relations and international political economy on global warming suggests that one part of any meaningful effort to radically reverse current trends of increasing green house gas (GHG) emissions is shared policies among states that generate costs for such emissions in many if not most of the world’s regions. Effectively employing such policies involves gaining much more extensive global commitments and developing much stronger compliance mechanism than those currently found in the Kyoto Protocol. Abstract : Egalitarian liberal theories of justice – so this dissertation argues – fail to take into accountthe full implications of the way citizens’ socio-cultural backgrounds work to undermine theequal opportunities these same theories demand. While egalitarians support extensiveredistribution of income and wealth from the privileged to the less privileged, and advocateequal opportunities for all, they do not properly attend either to how our shared societalcultures structure social esteem and related advantages, or to how our individual socioculturalenvironments structure the very act of choice.
