  1. 16. An Optimisation Approach to Cartographic Generalisation

    Author : Lars Harrie; Centrum för geografiska informationssystem (GIS-centrum); []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; incremental generalisation; multiple representation; least-squares method; optimisation; cartographic constraints; displacement; cartographic generalisation; graphic generalisation; map production; object-oriented spatial databases; Physical geography; geomorphology; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi; Technological sciences; Teknik;

    Abstract : Cartographic generalisation is the process of simplifying a representation to suit the scale and purpose of a map. As such, generalisation has always been a central part in map production. This thesis is a contribution to the ongoing work on automating cartographic generalisation. READ MORE

  2. 17. Education through Maps : The Challenges of Knowing and Understanding the World

    Author : Pontus Hennerdal; Ulf Jansson; Bo Malmberg; Ann Grubbström; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; cartography; geography education; map projections; maps; place location knowledge; world maps; Sweden; kartografi; geografiundervisning; kartor; kartprojektioner; namngeografi; världskartor; Sverige; Geography with Emphasis on Human Geography; geografi med kulturgeografisk inriktning;

    Abstract : The overall purpose of this thesis is to study, in relation to geography education and with a historical perspective, the challenges of knowing and understanding the world. The cases are all from Sweden. READ MORE

  3. 18. Towards an integrated ecology through mechanistic modelling of ecosystem structure and functioning

    Author : Thomas Hickler; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi; geomorphology; Physical geography; integrated ecology; plant hydraulic architecture; climate change; CO2 fertilisation effect; biogeography; biogeochemistry; vegetation dynamics; ecosystem modelling;

    Abstract : Plant physiology, population dynamics and the structure and functioning of ecosystems are closely interrelated. However, these processes are often investigated independently within different subdisciplines of ecology. READ MORE

  4. 19. The Ups and Downs of the Holocene: Exploring Relationships between Global CO2 and Climate Variability in the North Atlantic Region

    Author : Catherine Jessen; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marklära; geomorfologi; climatology; klimatologi; rapid climate change; Holocene climate; atmospheric CO2 concentrations; geochemical proxy indicators; Paleobotanik; palynology; Geology; palynologi; fylogeni; geomorphology; fysisk geografi; Geologi; physical geography; kartografi; pedology; cartography; phylogeny; Palaeobotany; stomatal frequency; lake sediments;

    Abstract : This thesis aimed to examine the relationship between climate and atmospheric CO2 concentrations through rapid climate changes during the Holocene. Climate was reconstructed using high-resolution, radiocarbon dated, lake sediment geochemical proxies (magnetic susceptibility, loss-on-ignition, total carbon/nitrogen/sulphur determinations and biogenic silica), vegetational reconstruction (pollen analysis) and stomatal frequency based CO2 reconstructions.
