  1. 1. Experimental and quantum-chemical studies of the surface interactions between organic molecules and nanocrystals of (a) RE2O3 (RE = Y or Gd); and (b) TiOb2

    Author : Henrik Pedersen; Per-Olov Käll; Lars-Johan Norrby; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Inorganic chemistry; Oorganisk kemi; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : The increasing interest for using nanocrystals in bio-medical and optical applications has highlighted the need of molecular functionalisation of nanocrystals. Knowledge of how to attach molecules to the nanocrystal surface is a key factor. READ MORE

    Abstract : Carbon foams are among the existing electrode designs proposed for use in 3D Li-ion microbatteries. For such electrodes to find applications in practical microbatteries, however, their void sizes, specific surface areas and pore volumes need be optimized. READ MORE

  3. 3. Sol-gel Synthesis and Photocatalytic Characterization of Immobilized TiO2 Films

    Author : Haidong Liao; Mats Jonsson; David Stenman; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Photocatalysis; Hydroxyl radical; TiO2 film; Sol-gel; Chemistry; Kemi; Catalysis; Katalys;

    Abstract :    Contamination of surface and ground water from industrial wastes and anthropogenic activities represents one of the greatest challenges to the sustainable development of human society. Heterogeneous photocatalysis, a kind of advanced oxidation process characterized by the production of highly oxidative hydroxyl radicals, is a relatively novel subject with tremendous potential in water treatment applications. Abstract : This thesis describes how solution chemical based carbothermal syntheses can be used for the synthesis of nanostructured zirconium carbide and nitride nanophase powders as well as a nickel-metal coating on NbC for use as a sintering agent. The focus is on the development of novel synthesis routes using atomic or small nanoscale level mixing of the metal oxide and carbon source in the starting precursors, enabling the use of lower synthesis temperatures and non-agglomerated nanosized powders.
