1. Adsorption of Metallic Ions onto Chitosan : Equilibrium and Kinetic Studies
Abstract : Equilibrium isotherms and the adsorption kinetics of heavy metals onto chitosan were studied experimentally. Chitosan, a biopolymer produced from crustacean shells, has applications in various areas, particularly in drinking water and wastewater treatment due to its ability to remove metallic ions from solutions. 2. Pea carbonic anhydrase : a kinetic study
Abstract : The enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA), catalysing the interconversion between CO2 and HCO3', has long been known to be present in plants as well as in animals. Several of the animal isozymes, but none of the plant CAs, have been extensively studied. READ MORE

3. Organocatalytic Acylation for the Kinetic Resolution of Secondary Aryl Alcohols : Synthetic Applications and Mechanistic Studies
Abstract : The research described in this thesis focuses on the catalytic acylative kinetic resolution (KR) of aromatic secondary alcohols, using a planar-chiral 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) organocatalyst. In the first part of this thesis, the substrate scope of the above mentioned process was expanded to aromatic secondary alcohols that contain an extra functional group in the alkyl moiety, such as 1,2-azido alcohols, 2-hydroxy-2-aryl-ethylphosphonates and 2-hydroxy-2-aryl esters. 4. Ruthenium-Catalyzed Hydrogen Transfer Reactions : Mechanistic Studies and Chemoenzymatic Dynamic Kinetic Resolutions
Abstract : The main focus of this thesis lies on transition metal-catalyzed hydrogen transfer reactions. In the first part of the thesis, the mechanism for racemization of sec-alcohols with a ruthenium complex, Ru(CO)2Cl(η5-C5Ph5) was studied. READ MORE

5. Neurotoxicity of β-lactam antibiotics : experimental kinetic and neurophysiological studies
Abstract : The neurotoxic potential of intravenous administered benzylpenicillin (BPC) was studied in rabbits with intact blood-CNS barriers and rabbits with experimental E. coli meningitis. At onset of epileptogenic EEG activity or seizures, serum, CSF and brain tissue were collected for assay of BPC. READ MORE
