  1. 1. Modelling and Optimisation of Integrated Biotechnical Processes -Application to the Fermentative Production of Lactic Acid from Wheat Flour

    Author : Christina Åkerberg; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Chemical technology and engineering; economy; wheat flour; starch; lactic acid; kinetics; simulation; modelling; optimisation; Kemiteknik och kemisk teknologi;

    Abstract : Biotechnical processes are often integrated to increase productivity and yield. It is difficult to predict the effects of process integration and to find optimum conditions for the process. A valuable tool for the evaluation of a complete process is mathematical modelling. READ MORE

  2. 2. Fermentation Inhibitors in the Production of Bio-ethanol: Detoxification of Lignocellulose Hydrolyzates and Physiological Effects of Furfural on Yeast

    Author : Ilona Sárvári Horváth; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; detoxification; fermentation inhibitors; metabolic flux analysis; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; lignocellulose; ethanol; chemostat; furfural conversion;

    Abstract : Different strategies to overcome inhibitor problems in the production of bio-ethanol from lignocellulose hydrolyzates with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae were examined. The strategies included detoxification prior to fermentation and in situ detoxification of furfural. A strain development for improved inhibitor tolerance was also initiated. READ MORE

  3. 3. Biobased production of succinic acid by Escherichia coli fermentation

    Author : Christian Andersson; Gen Larsson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biokemisk processteknik; Biochemical Process Engineering;

    Abstract : The prospects of peak oil, climate change and the dependency of fossil carbon have urged research and development of production methods for the manufacture of fuels and chemicals from renewable resources (biomass). The present thesis illustrates different aspects of biobased succinic acid production by a metabolically engineered E. coli strain. READ MORE

  4. 4. Metabolic Control Points in Ethanolic Fermentation of Xylose by Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Author : David Runquist; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Transcriptomics; Xylose reductase; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; Xylose; Ethanol; Transport; Lignocellulose;

    Abstract : Baker’s yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisae, has been engineered to utilize the pentose sugar xylose present in lignocellulose biomass for the production of ethanol. Currently ethanol production from xylose is slow which limits the implementation of said strains in industrial production. READ MORE

  5. 5. Fermentation of wheat starch hydrolysate by Lactococcus lactis: Factors affecting product formation

    Author : Karin Hofvendahl; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nutrients; temperature; pH; optical isomers; maltose; wheat; starch hydrolysate; Lactococcus lactis; lactic acid; SSF; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Abstract : Lactic acid exists as two optical isomers, D- and L-lactic acid. For the production of biodegradable poly-lactic acid an optically pure product is desirable, but a racemate of known and constant ratio can also be used. Lactic acid can be produced either synthetically or fermentatively. READ MORE
