  1. 11. 5-HT2A : a serotonin receptor with a possible role in joint diseases

    Author : Anders Kling; Solbritt Rantapää-Dahlqvist; Carl-Olav Stiller; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 5-HT2A serotonin receptor; serotonin; rheumatoid arthritis; adverse drug reaction; HTR2A; glucocorticoids; klinisk farmakologi; Clinical Pharmacology;

    Abstract : BackgroundSerotonin (5-HT), an amino acid derivative and neurotransmitter, has for long been studied in relation to inflammation. It is an endogenous ligand for several different types of serotonin receptors. The serotonin receptor 5-HT2A has been reported to have a role in the pathophysiology of arthritis in animal experiment models. READ MORE

  2. 12. Neurotoxicity of β-lactam antibiotics : experimental kinetic and neurophysiological studies

    Author : Silvia E. Schliamser; Ragnar Norrby; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; benzylpenicillin; blood-brain barrier; ß-lactam antibiotics; CSF; CNS; EEG; imipenem cilastatin; FCE 22101; meningitis; neurotoxicity of; silent-second; thiopental; transport system; uraemia;

    Abstract : The neurotoxic potential of intravenous administered benzylpenicillin (BPC) was studied in rabbits with intact blood-CNS barriers and rabbits with experimental E. coli meningitis. At onset of epileptogenic EEG activity or seizures, serum, CSF and brain tissue were collected for assay of BPC. READ MORE

  3. 13. Use of secondary preventive drugs after stroke

    Abstract : A nonparametric population approach is now accessible to a more comprehensive network of modelers given its recent implementation into the popular NONMEM application, previously limited in scope by standard parametric approaches for the analysis of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data. The aim of this thesis was to assess the relative merits and downsides of nonparametric models in a nonlinear mixed effects framework in comparison with a set of parametric models developed in NONMEM based on real datasets and when applied to simple experimental settings, and to develop new diagnostic tools adapted to nonparametric models. Abstract : Background Animal models can be used to mimic human conditions of psychopathology, and also as pre-clinical models to evaluate candidate drugs. With hormonal treatment it is possible to produce behavior in the rat which corresponds to the mental symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), and pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). READ MORE
