  1. 16. From Lab to Chip – and back : Polymer microfluidic systems for sample handling in point-of-care diagnostics

    Author : Jonas Hansson; Wouter van der Wijngaart; Hywel Morgan; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis contributes to the development of Lab-on-a-Chip systems that enables reliable, rapid medical diagnostics at the point-of-care. These contributions are focused on microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip systems for sepsis diagnosis, autonomous sample-to-answer tests, and dried blood spot sampling. READ MORE

    Abstract : The organisation of fluids in small compartments is ubiquitous in nature, such as in the cellular composition of all life. This work explores several engineering avenues where microscale fluid compartmentalization can bring novel material properties or novel functionality in life sciences or medicine. READ MORE

  3. 18. On acoustic particle and cell manipulation in microfluidic systems

    Author : Filip Petersson; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Medicin människa och djur ; Natural science; Naturvetenskap; Technological sciences; Teknik; acoustic particle manipulation standing wave; acoustic radiation force; laminar flow; Medicine human and vertebrates ; microparticles; ultrasound; lab-on-a-chip; µ-TAS; separation; cells; microfabrication; microtechnology; microfluidics;

    Abstract : The combination of laminar flows in microfabricated channels and acoustic forces induced in ultrasonic standing wave fields offers new possibilities for advanced particle and cell manipulation in lab-on-a-chip applications as well as in relatively high throughput applications. Acoustic particle manipulation systems can be used e.g. READ MORE

  4. 19. On microchannel acoustophoresis - Experimental considerations and life science applications

    Author : Per Augustsson; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; microtechnology; microfluidics; lab on a chip; separation; acoustophoresis; ultrasound; acoustic resonance; acoustic radiation force; phage display; circulating tumour cells; acoustofluidics;

    Abstract : This thesis presents experimental studies of microchannel acoustophoresis, a technique for manipulation of microscopic objects in suspension by means of acoustic radiation forces induced by ultrasonic standing wave fields. By arranging an acoustic resonance across the width of a microchannel, the path of individual cells or microparticles can be deflected orthogonally to the fluid flow. READ MORE

  5. 20. Lab on a chip for electrophysiological measurements with control of the oxygen content : optical manipulation and spectroscopic analysis of biological cells

    Author : Ahmed Alrifaiy; Ove Axner; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Medical Engineering for Healthcare; Medicinsk teknik för hälsovård;

    Abstract : Stroke affects nearly 20 million people around the world every year. Clinically, stroke is a result of brain damage due to the shortage of oxygen delivered to the nerve cells. To minimize suffering and costs related to the disease, extensive research is performed on different levels. READ MORE
