11. Photonic MEMS for optical information technologies
Abstract : Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) combine hundreds of optical components on a chip, and can enable fast communications, high-performance computing, and improved sensing. PICs, made by miniaturized optical waveguides, require many reconfigurable elements to enable programmable functionalities and to compensate for fabrication variations and environmental factors. 12. Multidimensional Ultrasonic Standing Wave Manipulation in Microfluidic Chips
Abstract : The use of ultrasonic standing waves for contactless manipulation of microparticles in microfluidic systems is a field with potential to become a new standard tool in lab-on-chip systems. Compared to other contactless manipulation methods ultrasonic standing wave manipulation shows promises of gentle cell handling, low cost, and precise temperature control. READ MORE

13. Heterogeneous Technologies for Microfluidic Systems
Abstract : In this thesis, conventional and unconventional technologies have been studied and combined in order to make heterogeneous microfluidics with potential advantages, especially in biological applications. Many conventional materials, like silicon, glass, thermoplastic polymers, polyimide and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) have been combined in building heterogeneous microfluidic devices or demonstrators. 14. Properties of Multifunctional Oxide Thin Films Despostied by Ink-jet Printing
Abstract : Ink-jet printing offers an ideal answer to the emerging trends and demands of depositing at ambient temperatures picoliter droplets of oxide solutions into functional thin films and device components with a high degree of pixel precision. It is a direct single-step mask-free patterning technique that enables multi-layer and 3D patterning. READ MORE

15. Ultra-sensitive measurements of magnetically labelled RCA products in a microfluidic channel using a high-Tc SQUID
Abstract : The development of a nucleic acid (deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), ribonucleic acid (RNA)) bioassay based on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with a high-Tc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) gradiometer as a magnetic readout is described. The specific binding of the MNPs to the target DNA molecules changes the MNPs size distribution and, therefore, the relaxation dynamics and is measured by magnetic ac susceptometry. READ MORE
