  1. 6. Brain Tissue Oxygenation in Traumatic Brain Injury : Experimental and Clinical Studies

    Author : Karlis Purins; Anders Lewén; Per Enblad; Oliver Sakowitz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Brain tissue oxygenation; Cerebral metabolism; Traumatic brain injury; Cerebral ischemia; Threshold levels; Neurovent-PTO; Microdialysis; Neurosurgery; Neurokirurgi;

    Abstract : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability. TBI is frequently followed by cerebral ischemia which is a great contributor to secondary brain damage. The main causes of cerebral ischemia are pathophysiological changes in cerebral blood flow and metabolism. READ MORE

  2. 7. Pedicled and free TRAM flaps in breast reconstructions : a comparative study

    Author : Åsa Edsander-Nord; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : breast reconstruction; TRAM; pedicled flap; free flap; microdialysis; monitoring; flap circulation; flap metabolism; glucose; lactate; glycerol; abdominal muscles; trunk muscle strength; KIN-COM; quantitative sensory testing; tactile perception threshold; thermal perception threshold; breast volume; thermoplastic; quality of life; SF-36; esthetic evaluation; applanation tonometry;

    Abstract : The transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous (TRAM) flap is frequently used when autologous tissue is desired for breast reconstruction, and it can be transferred pedicled or free. The pedicled TRAM flap is elevated as a lower transverse abdominal flap with the rectus abdominis muscle attached in the epigastric area, by which means the deep superior epigastric vessels nourish the flap. 3. 8. Endocrine and therapeutic aspects of infertile women with the polycystic ovary syndrome

    Author : Margareta Fridström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : cost-effectiveness; FSH threshold; glucocorticoids; granulosa cells; infertility; in vitro fertilisation; obesity; ovulation induction; polycystic ovary syndrome; pregnancy complications;

    Abstract : Fertility treatment with gonadotrophins in infertile clomiphene resistant women with the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is troublesome with an unpredictive ovarian response. The purpose of this study was to elucidate aspects of ovarian sensitivity and to evaluate treatment efficiency and costs of ovulation induction (OI) and in vitro fertilisation (IVF), as well as pregnancy outcome after infertility treatment in patients with PCOS. 4. 9. Measurements for improvement of running capacity : physiological and biomechanical evaluations

    Author : Lennart Gullstrand; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Running economy; treadmill; track running; measurement methods;

    Abstract : Introduction: Running is included in a large number of sports and one of the most well investigated modes of locomotion in both physiology and biomechanics. This thesis focuses on how some new methods from both areas may be used to capture running capacity in mid-distance and distance running from laboratory and field recordings. READ MORE

  5. 10. The application of the Critical Power construct to endurance exercise

    Author : Kerry McGawley; Helen Carter; Jeanne Dekerle; Gary Brickley; Jo Doust; Harry Rossiter; University of Brighton; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Critical power (CP) is a theoretical construct reflecting the highest work rate that can be maintained by continuous aerobic energy resynthesis for an infinite period of time.  In practice, however, the CP estimate derived from mathematical modelling usually leads to exhaustion within 1 h.
