  1. 1. Pit lake water quality and hydrology : Insights from case studies and modelling of pit lakes in northern Sweden

    Author : Oscar Paulsson; Anders Widerlund; Lars Lövgren; Adam P. Jarvis; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Tillämpad geokemi; Applied Geochemistry;

    Abstract : As extraction techniques are improving an increased number of low grade deposits can be economically mined. However, this also means that the number of open pit mines will increase and as a result the number of pit lakes as well. READ MORE

  2. 2. Climate Change Impacts on the Catchment Contribution to Lake Water Quantity and Quality

    Author : Karen Moore; Kurt Pettersson; Donald Pierson; Timothy Kratz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Climate change; water quality modelling; Lake Mälaren; GWLF; nutrient transport;

    Abstract : A key question related to climate change projections is how will aquatic systems respond to changes in variables such as temperature and precipitation? This thesis uses GWLF, a simple catchment scale model to explore potential impacts of climate change on water quantity and quality.River discharge and nutrient loads were modelled for several warmer world scenarios. 3. 3. An inductive approach to the modeling of lake water quality in dimictic, glacial/boreal lakes

    Author : Tomas K. E. Thierfelder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Sedimentology; sedimentologi;

    Abstract : To explore the interaction between elements of the watershed and lake water quality, a database large enough to approximate the generic population of dimictic, glacial/boreal lakes is assembled and analyzed with multivariate statistical methods in an inductive top-down approach. Utilizing the analytical capabilities of geographical information systems, the spatially distributed characteristics of land cover, soil and bedrock elements are identified and parameterized with respect to element morphology and hydrology. 4. 4. Infrared spectroscopy as a tool to reconstruct past lake-ecosystem changes : Method development and application in lake-sediment studies

    Author : Carsten Meyer-Jacob; Richard Bindler; Hendrik Vogel; Jan Karlsson; John F. Boyle; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; visible-near infrared spectroscopy; PLS regression; biogenic silica; climate change; carbon cycling; lake-water quality; geochemistry; paleolimnology; Holocene; Lake El’gygytgyn; Torneträsk;

    Abstract : Natural archives such as lake sediments allow us to assess contemporary ecosystem responses to climate and environmental changes in a long-term context beyond the few decades to at most few centuries covered by monitoring or historical data. To achieve a comprehensive view of the changes preserved in sediment records, multi-proxy studies – ideally in high resolution – are necessary. READ MORE

  5. 5. Data preparation, hydrodynamic and contaminant transport shallow-water simulations of Lake Victoria

    Author : Seema Paul; Vladimir Cvetkovic; Jesper Oppelstrup; Roger Thunvik; Felix Mtalo; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Lake bathymetry model; Steady-state analysis; Numerical model validation; Lake water balance; Correlation and seasonal variations; Solute transport; Vattendjupskarta; Validering av numerisk modell; Vattenbalans; Korrelationer och säsongs-variation; Transport av lösliga ämnen; Mark- och vattenteknik; Land and Water Resources Engineering;

    Abstract : This study explores shallow lake numerical hydrodynamic processes that support model development and validation, extreme events and effects of water circulation in Lake Victoria. Lake Victoria is the second largest freshwater lake in the world, and the largest in East Africa. READ MORE
