11. Diatoms in Lake Duluti : Tracking Environmental Variability in Northern Tanzania during the Past 1000 Years
Abstract : The tropics are the regions which are least understood climatically and new data on past climate variability is necessary for reliable future modeling of climate change. This thesis contributes with new paleoenvironmental information from a small crater lake in northern Tanzania and provides an additional link between the integrated history of climate, environment and socioeconomic variability in tropical Africa. 13. Lake Hydrodynamics and Pollution Transport under Climate Change : The Case of Lake Victoria
Abstract : A very small part of the total earth’s water is freshwater (only 2.5 %). Unfortunately, due to climate change and pervasive manmade activities, surface freshwater quality in many places of the world has become degraded. READ MORE

14. Gas Exchange over Aquatic Interfaces and its Importance for Greenhouse Gas Emission
Abstract : Aquatic ecosystems play a substantial role in global cycling of carbon (C), despite covering only about 4% of the earth surface. They emit large amounts of greenhouse gases (GHG) to the atmosphere, comparable to the amount of C stored annually in terrestrial ecosystems. In addition, C can be buried in lake sediments. READ MORE

15. Lake sediment as environmental archive : natural and anthropogenic influence on the chronology of trace elements
Abstract : The focus of this thesis is the historical pollution of some seldom-monitored trace elements (SMTEs; Ag, Be, Ga, In, Sb and Tl) that have been involuntarily released for several thousands of years but whose usage have increased during the industrial era. Sediment cores from four rural lakes in a south to north transect in central Sweden, and two urban lakes have been used as environmental archives for chronological studies. READ MORE
