  2. 2. Transition to turbulence in the asymptotic suction boundary layer

    Author : Taras Khapko; Dan Henningson; Philipp Schlatter; Yohann Duguet; Marc Avila; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; boundary layers; instability; laminar-turbulent transition; dynamical systems; edge states; near-wall turbulence; laminarisation;

    Abstract : The focus of this thesis is on the numerical study of subcritical transition to turbulence in the asymptotic suction boundary layer (ASBL). Applying constant homogeneous suction prevents the spatial growth of the boundary layer, granting access to the asymptotic dynamics. READ MORE

  3. 3. Receptivity of Boundary-Layer Flows over Flat and Curved Walls

    Author : Lars-Uve Schrader; Luca Brandt; Dan Stefan Henningson; Gregoire Casalis; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Boundary-layer receptivity; laminar-turbulent transition; swept-plate boundary layer; Görtler flow; leading-edge effects; swept-wing flow; crossflow vortices; Görtler rolls; disturbance streaks; wall roughness; free-stream turbulence; Fluid mechanics; Strömningsmekanik;

    Abstract : Direct numerical simulations of the receptivity and instability of boundary layers on flat and curved surfaces are herein reported. Various flow models are considered with the aim to capture aspects of flows over straight and swept wings such as wall curvature, pressure variations, leading-edge effects, streamline curvature and crossflow. 4. 4. Feedback control and modal structures in transitional shear flows

    Author : Onofrio Semeraro; Dan S. Henningson; Mihailo Jovanoic; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; flow control; flat-plate boundary layer; laminar-turbulent transition; Other engineering mechanics; Övrig teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract :   Two types of shear flows are investigated in this thesis; numerical simulations are performed for the analysis and control of the perturbation arising in a boundary layer over a flat plate, whereas PIV measurements are analysed for the investigation of a confined turbulent jet. Modal structures of the flows are identified: the aim is to understand the flow phenomena and to identify reduced-order models for the feedback control design. READ MORE

  5. 5. Experimental studies of bypass transition and its control

    Author : Fredrik Lundell; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; fluid mechanics; active control; Laminar-turbulent transition; free-stream turbulence; Engineering mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : Bypass transition, i.e. transition of a boundary layer at subcritical Reynolds numbers, has been studied. Fundamental studies of the phenomenon as such have been performed side by side with experiments aimed at controlling, i. READ MORE
