  1. 1. Value of Information Analysis for Site Investigations in Remediation Projects

    Author : Pär-Erik Back; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; uncertainty; value of information; soil; decision analysis; sampling; remediation; contaminated land; site investigation;

    Abstract : Site investigations of contaminated land are associated with high costs. From a societal point of view, just enough economic resources should be spent to allow societys limited resources to be allocated optimally to sustainable development. READ MORE

  2. 2. Fractionation of Cu and Fe isotopes in metal-rich mine sites : biotic and abiotic processes

    Author : Nathalie Pérez Rodríguez; Magnus Land; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cu and Fe isotopes; fractionation; tailings; plants; phytoremediation; organic amendments; soil bacteria; Cu and Fe cycle; covellite; redox processes; Applied Geology; Tillämpad geologi;

    Abstract : After mineral exploitation the residual grinded and milled material, rich in sulphide minerals and heavy metals, is often left exposed to the atmospheric variables. This weathered mine waste material can lead to the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD) which has negative effects to the environment. READ MORE

  3. 3. Gentle Remediation Options (GRO) for Managing Risks and Providing Ecosystem Services at Contaminated Sites

    Author : Paul David Drenning; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Risk-Based Land Management RBLM ; Brownfields; Sustainable Remediation; Gentle Remediation Options GRO ; Ecosystem Services; Phytomanagement;

    Abstract : Soils are a non-renewable resource and comprise a key component of the world's stock of natural capital. Due to industrialisation, urbanisation and other patterns of unsustainable development, widespread land degradation in the form of contamination, soil sealing, compaction, etc. READ MORE

  4. 4. Batch Sorption Studies of Aqueous Cadmium and Lead from Contaminated Water onto Selected Biosorbents

    Author : Grace Kizito Bakyayita; Ann-Catrine Norrström; Robinah N. Kulabako; Maimuna Nalubega; Roger Thunvik; Ann-Margret Hvitt Strömvall; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biosorbents; cadmium; competitive uptake; Freundlich; pseudo-second-order kinetics; Langmuir; lead; remediation; risks; speciation; toxicity effects; Mark- och vattenteknik; Land and Water Resources Engineering;

    Abstract : Groundwater, wastewater, surface runoff and surface water samples from Lake Victoria basin, Uganda was assessed for trace metals contamination. Untreated, base-treated and peroxide-treated biosorbents from Albizia coriaria, Coffea canephora, Cyperus papyrus, Erythrina abyssinica and Musa spp were investigated for removal of selected trace metals from contaminated water in batch studies. 5. 5. Opportunity Windows and Added Value of Gentle Remediation Options for Contaminated Land Management

    Author : Paul Drenning; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sustainable and Risk-Based Land Management SRBLM ; Ecosystem services; Soil health; Phytomanagement; Soil functions; Cost-benefit analysis; Gentle remediation options GRO ;

    Abstract : Well-functioning, healthy soils are increasingly recognized as vital to human well-being, but soil contamination impairs the capacity of soils to perform their essential functions and provide humans with ecosystem services (ES). Contaminated land poses risks to human health and the environment, which must be managed, but also constitute an important and underutilized land and soil resource for providing ES in urban areas through phytomanagement with gentle remediation options (GRO) – nature-based solutions using plants, fungi, bacteria, and soil amendments to manage risks at contaminated sites while also improving soil functionality.
