  1. 1. Continuous Landscapes in Finite Space : Making Sense of Satellite Images in Social Science

    Author : Anders Wästfelt; Ulf Sporrong; Christer Persson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Land use; Landcover; Landscape; Landscape transition; Landscape characterisation; Remote sensed images; Spatial context; Hybrid characterisation; Human geography; Kulturgeografi;

    Abstract : Questions of landscape values connected to agriculture and environment are always related to local land use. In order to study land use it is necessary to understand the intentions of the users as well as the conditions for land use in a specific landscape. READ MORE

  2. 2. Soil organic carbon stocks in high mountain periglacial settings of Patagonia (SW Argentina) and Vindelfjällen (NW Sweden)

    Author : Christina Fröjd; Peter Kuhry; Dario Trombotto Liaudat; Margareta Johansson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Soil organic carbon; mountain permafrost; periglacial settings; solifluction landforms; alpine wetlands; landcover upscaling; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

  3. 3. Satellie Monitoring of Urban Growth and Indicator-based Assessment of Environmental Impact

    Author : Dorothy Furberg; Yifang Ban; Margareta Ihse; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Urban growth; remote sensing; landcover classification; landscape metrics; environmental indicators; environmental impact; Greater Toronto Area; Stockholm; Shanghai;

    Abstract : One of the major consequences of urbanization is the transformation of land surfaces from rural/natural environments to built-up land that supports diverse forms of human activity. These transformations impact the local geology, climate, hydrology, flora and fauna and human-life supporting ecosystem services in the region. READ MORE

  4. 4. Subsurface dams in water resource management : methods for assessment and location

    Author : Imran Ali Jamali; Bo Olofsson; Stephen Foster; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Subsurface dams; Groundwater; GIS; Regolith thickness; Groundwater; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering;

    Abstract : Natural groundwater storage can be improved by constructing a subsurface barrier that is a subsurface dam, in order to capture the subsurface flows and raise the groundwater levels (GWLs) in the sediment layers. Subsurface dams are preferable to surface dams because of lower evaporation, higher functionality, lower cost of construction, lessened risk for contamination and the possibility of utilizing land over the dam. 5. 5. Effects of landscape patterns on small mammal abundance

    Author : Frauke Ecke; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Landscape Ecology; Landskapsekologi;

    Abstract : Several studies indicate a long-term decline in the numbers of voles in northern Fennoscandia. Altered land use and forest management practices have been proposed as possible causes of the decline. READ MORE
