  1. 1. Evolutionary ecology of arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) : Intra- and interspecific interactions in circumpolar populations

    Author : Johan Hammar; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Arctic char; Salvelinus alpinus; biogeography; niche; life history; population ecology; intra- and interspecific interactions; cannibalism; competition; landlocked; marginal populations; species border; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines a suite of ecological and genetic mechanisms influencing the fundamental and realized niche borders of European and North American populations of the Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) species complex in allopatry as well as in sympatry with brown trout (Salmo trutta) or brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis). 2. 2. Migration and quality of landlocked Atlantic salmon smolt : Implications for conservation and management

    Author : Johnny R Norrgård; Eva Bergman; Larry A Greenberg; Monika Schmitz; Martyn Lucas; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; acoustic telemetry; hatchery; life history; migration mortality; regulated rivers; Salmo salar; salmon; smolt; trout; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Atlantic salmon Salmo salar has a complex life cycle, including long migrations and habitat shifts for both juveniles and adults. As such, salmon populations are vulnerable to habitat degradation and fragmentation along their migratory routes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Conservation of landlocked Atlantic salmon in a regulated river : Behaviour of migratory spawners and juveniles

    Author : Anna Hagelin; Eva Bergman; Fleming Ian; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Atlantic salmon; conservation; migration; spawning; hydropower; competition; juveniles; brown trout; hatchery reared; fallback; delay; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Hydropower dams represent one of the major threats to river ecosystems today. The dams block migratory routes in many rivers, which is problematic for migratory fish species. Trap-and-transport may be an alternative to fish passage solutions, as a strategy to compensate for lost river connectivity. READ MORE

  4. 4. Landlocked Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. and trout Salmo trutta L. in the regulated River Klarälven, Sweden : Implications for conservation and management

    Author : Johnny R Norrgård; Eva Bergman; Hans Lundqvist; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Conservation and management of migratory salmonids requires an understanding of their ecology at multiple scales, and a holistic view, including assessment of historical and present anthropogenic impacts. In the regulated River Klarälven, with 11 hydropower dams, populations of landlocked Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and migratory brown trout Salmo trutta have declined due to human activities.
