1. Network Based Tools and Indicators for Landscape Ecological Assessments, Planning, and Design
Abstract : Land use change constitutes a primary driving force in shaping social-ecological systems world wide, and its effects reach far beyond the directly impacted areas. Graph based landscape ecological tools have become established as a promising way to efficiently explore and analyze the complex, spatial systems dynamics of ecological networks in physical landscapes. 2. Deriving landscape metrics from sample data
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the efficiency of using sampling methods to derive landscape metrics. It also explores what sampling methods are to be preferred for different metrics and how metrics in some cases can be redefined to better suit a sample-based data collection framework. READ MORE

3. Remote Sensing of Urbanization and Environmental Impacts
Abstract : This thesis aims to establish analytical frameworks to map urban growth patterns with spaceborne remote sensing data and to evaluate environmental impacts through Landscape Metrics and Ecosystem Services. Urbanization patterns at regional scale were evaluated in China's largest urban agglomerations and at metropolitan scale in Shanghai, Stockholm and Beijing using medium resolution optical satellite data. 4. Satellie Monitoring of Urban Growth and Indicator-based Assessment of Environmental Impact
Abstract : One of the major consequences of urbanization is the transformation of land surfaces from rural/natural environments to built-up land that supports diverse forms of human activity. These transformations impact the local geology, climate, hydrology, flora and fauna and human-life supporting ecosystem services in the region. READ MORE
