  1. 21. SCALING UP RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES - The role of resource mobilisation in the growth of technological innovation systems

    Author : Kersti Karltorp; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; resource mobilisation.; scaling up technologies; Wind power; technological innovation system; biorefineries;

    Abstract : Rapid and large-scale diffusion of renewable energy technologies is needed to avoid severe climate changes that would dramatically affect the conditions for human life on Earth. To scale up these technologies involves technological development, but also the alteration of structures that are locked-in to established socio-technical systems. READ MORE

  2. 22. Change and Progress in Disaster Risk Reduction

    Author : Maximilian S. T. Wanner; Daniel Nohrstedt; Charles F. Parker; Andreas Duit; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; public policy; sustainable development; disaster risk reduction; adaptation; international environmental agreements; soft law; regime effectiveness; Hyogo Framework for Action; Fiji; Nepal; Statskunskap; Political Science;

    Abstract : Human-induced climate change is projected to increase the frequency and magnitude of natural hazard events, posing a growing global threat to lives, livelihoods, and assets. Much past research on disaster risk reduction (DRR) has focused on failures of disaster management, while less attention has been devoted to how DRR has changed or improved over time. READ MORE

  3. 23. Democratic Governance in the Transition from Yugoslav Self-Management to a Market Economy : The Case of the Slovenian Privatization Debates 1990-1992

    Author : Branka Likic-Brboric; Maths Isacson; Göran Salmonsson; Thomas Lundén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Economic history; privatization; transition; democratization; marketization; property rights; Slovenia; institutions; self-management; social ownership; economic democracy; discourse; governance; interdiscursivity; justice; efficiency; path dependence; Ekonomisk historia; Economic history; Ekonomisk historia;

    Abstract : The main object of this doctoral dissertation is the Slovenian transition to a market economy with a focus on the genesis of the Slovenian privatization model and the political and legislative process behind its formulation. Starting from a presentation of the international context and historical legacies, the study investigates the almost three-year-long Slovenian theoretical, parliamentary, economic, political and public debates (1990-1992) concerning the choice of model and institutional framework for large-scale privatization. 4. 24. Structural and Functional Studies of Membrane Proteins : From Characterisation of a Fatty Acyl-CoA Synthetase to the Discovery of Superoxide Oxidase

    Author : Camilla A. K. Lundgren; Martin Högbom; James Imlay; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : This thesis is divided into three parts; the first part describes a method for efficient screening of membrane proteins for crystallography. By utilising the properties of a folding reporter GFP it is possible to quickly and accurately screen the stability of a protein in a range of conditions without full purification. READ MORE

  5. 25. Detailed Numerical Simulations of Turbulent Premixed Flames at Moderate and High Karlovitz Numbers

    Author : Henning Carlsson; Strömningsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Direct numerical simulation; Large eddy simulation; Turbulent premixed combustion; Flow-flame interaction; High Karlovitz number;

    Abstract : In generally accepted and applied flamelet combustion models, a turbulent flame is mainly assumed distorted by the large-scale turbulence eddies, whereas small-scale turbulence effects on the local flamelet structures are neglected. However, in a lot of industrial applications rather high turbulent intensities are often imposed, which induce turbulence scales at ranges smaller than the flame thickness. READ MORE
