16. The Arctic Atmosphere : Interactions between clouds, boundary-layer turbulence and large-scale circulation
Abstract : Arctic climate is changing fast, but weather forecast and climate models have serious deficiencies in representing the Arctic atmosphere, because of the special conditions that occur in this region. The cold ice surface and the advection of warm air aloft from the south result in a semi-continuous presence of a temperature inversion, known as the “Arctic inversion”, which is governed by interacting large-scale and local processes, such as surface fluxes and cloud formation. 17. Protein Structure Prediction : Model Building and Quality Assessment
Abstract : Proteins play a crucial roll in all biological processes. The wide range of protein functions is made possible through the many different conformations that the protein chain can adopt. The structure of a protein is extremely important for its function, but to determine the structure of protein experimentally is both difficult and time consuming. READ MORE

18. Distributed Stochastic Programming with Applications to Large-Scale Hydropower Operations
Abstract : Stochastic programming is a subfield of mathematical programming concerned with optimization problems subjected to uncertainty. Many engineering problems with random elements can be accurately modeled as a stochastic program. In particular, decision problems associated with hydropower operations motivate the application of stochastic programming. READ MORE

19. System identification of large-scale linear and nonlinear structural dynamicmodels
Abstract : System identification is a powerful technique to build a model from measurement data by using methods from different fields such as stochastic inference, optimization and linear algebra. It consists of three steps: collecting data, constructing a mathematical model and estimating its parameters. READ MORE

20. Graph Algorithms for Large-Scale and Dynamic Natural Language Processing
Abstract : In Natural Language Processing, researchers design and develop algorithms to enable machines to understand and analyze human language. These algorithms benefit multiple downstream applications including sentiment analysis, automatic translation, automatic question answering, and text summarization. READ MORE
