1. Photonic devices with MQW active material and waveguide gratings : modelling and characterisation
Abstract : The research work presented in this thesis deals with modelling, design and characterisation of passive and active optical waveguide devices. The rst part of the thesis is related to algorithm development and numerical modelling of planar optical waveguides and gratings using the Method of Lines (MoL). READ MORE

2. Plasma assisted technology for Si-based photonic integrated circuits
Abstract : The last two decades have witnessed a large increase in capacity in telecommunication systems, thanks to the development of high bandwidth, fiber optic based networks. Nevertheless the continuing growth of Internet data traffic, fuelled by the development of numerous services like on-line commerce, video on demand, large audio/video files downloads, demands for a significant increase in the ability of the network nodes to manage incoming and outcoming data streams effectively and fast. 3. Surface-normal multiple quantum well electroabsorption modulators : for optical signal processing and asymmetric free-space communication
Abstract : Electroabsorption is the physical phenomenon by which the absorption of light in a medium can be controlled by applying an electric field. The Quantum–Confined Stark Effect, which makes the absorption band–edge in quantum wells very field–dependent, together with the strong absorption peak provided by excitons, are the physical foundations for the success of electroabsorption modulators based on quantum well structures in telecommunication networks. 4. Photonic Devices and Applications based on Intersubband Transitions and Electromagnetically Induced Transparency
Abstract : Although photonic devices have experienced a rapid development lately, there is still room for substantial improvements in performance. From a telecommunications perspective, improvements in speed, size, integration and power consumption are desired. There is also a general interest in photonic devices with new functionalities. 5. Design, Fabrication, and Characterization of Nano-Photonic Components Based on Silicon and Plasmonic Material
Abstract : Size reduction is a key issue in the development of contemporary integrated photonics. This thesis is mainly devoted to study some integrated photonic components in sub-wavelength or nanometric scales, both theoretically and experimentally. READ MORE
