11. Preservation of parathyroid function in thyroid and parathyroid surgery
Abstract : Preservation of normal parathyroid function and calcium homeostasis after operations on the thyroid and parathyroid glands is a difficult assignment in endocrine surgery, and it is crucial to minimise the risks of permanent postoperative hypoparathyroidism. The aim of this thesis was to study the vascular supply of the parathyroid glands and the revascularisation, growth, and function of transplanted parathyroid tissue, in order to add new information about parathyroid preservation. 12. Splanchnic perfusion in cardiac surgery
Abstract : Splanchnic ischemia in cardiac surgery is considered a risk factor in the development of the Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS), which is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the intensive care unit. Splanchnic ischemia/reperfusion may lead to an injury of the intestinal mucosa and induce a systemic inflammation (SIRS), which is proposed to precede MODS. READ MORE

13. Skin circulation measured by fluorescein flowmetry
Abstract : Fluorescein flowmetry (FF) is an indicator dilution technique using sodium fluorescein as an indicator. If the tissue is illuminated with U-V light or blue light, after a bolus injection of the dye, fluorescence is seen in the tissue, and can be measured either photographically or by the video technique. 14. Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging in Reconstructive Surgery
Abstract : ObjectivesReconstructive surgery aims to restore function or normal appearance by reconstructing defective organs after trauma or disease. In patients undergoing reconstructive surgery, previous trauma, surgery or radiotherapy can result in compromised blood supply. READ MORE

15. Photon migration in tissue : laser induced fluorescence for cancer diagnostics and influence of optical properties on microvascular Doppler spectroscopy
Abstract : Laser induced flourescence (LIF) is an "optical biopsy" method, based on the selective accumulation of fluorophores in neoplastic tissue. Two recently developed, non-photosensitizing tumor seeking carotenoporphyrins were assessed regarding tumor selectivity, and biodistribution, in experimental animals. READ MORE
