1. Novel Technologies for Mode-Locking of Solid-State Lasers
Abstract : The subject of this thesis is the investigation of novel technologies for mode-locking of diode-pumped, solid-state lasers. Novel saturable absorbers are used: quantum dots (QDs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which both are low-dimensional nano-formations. In addition, mode-locking by cascaded nonlinearities is explored. 2. Development and Application of Single-Ended Picosecond Laser Diagnostics
Abstract : Light detection and ranging (lidar), a method for nonintrusive, single-ended, and range resolved measurements, has been developed and applied for combustion related diagnostics. Employing picosecond laser pulse durations and detectors providing temporal resolution on the order of picoseconds, lidar has been applied successfully for both quantitative temperature- and species concentration measurements, obtaining an ultimate range resolution of 0. 3. Experiments on Laser-Based Particle Acceleration : Beams of Energetic Electrons and Protons
Abstract : This thesis describes experiments involving laser-plasma-based acceleration of electrons and protons, using the techniques of laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) and target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA). By using extremely high accelerating field strengths, up to the order of TV m-1, it is possible to reach high kinetic particle energies over very short distances. READ MORE

4. Laser Spectroscopic Techniques for Combustion Diagnostics Directed Towards Industrial Applications
Abstract : In the work presented in the thesis, different laser spectroscopic techniques were utilized for measurement of species concentrations, as well as for surface thermometry. Experiments were conducted in various combustion environments, ranging from laboratory burners to truck-sized internal combustion (IC) engines, gas turbine combustors and a full-size aircraft turbofan engine.
