1. Variations in Functional Lateralization
Abstract : The general aim of this thesis was to study asymmetric activation of the neocortex in normal subjects, using the rCBF technique and different cognitive tasks. The aim was also to study individual and group variations of asymmetric activation, as well as factors pertaining to these variations. The thesis is based on four investigations. READ MORE

2. Lateralization of human olfaction : cognitive functions and electrophysiology
Abstract : In this thesis lateralization of olfactory functions was investigated by both behavioral and electrophysiological assessment, the latter with the olfactory event-related potential (OERP) technique. The olfactory sense is primarily ipsilateral in that a stimulus that is presented to one nostril is initially processed in the same hemisphere. READ MORE

3. Molecular Adaptations in the Endogenous Opioid System in Human and Rodent Brain
Abstract : The aims of the thesis were to examine i) whether the endogenous opioid system (EOS) is lateralized in human brain areas involved in processing of emotions and pain; ii) whether EOS responses to unilateral brain injury depend on side of lesion, and iii) whether in human alcoholics, this system is involved in molecular adaptations in brain areas relevant for cognitive control of addictive behavior and habit formation. The main findings were that (1) opioid peptides but not opioid receptors and classic neurotransmitters are markedly lateralized in the anterior cingulate cortex involved in processing of positive and negative emotions and affective component of pain. 4. The psychophysics of human echolocation
Abstract : Echolocation is the capacity to detect, localize, discriminate, and, overall, gather spatial information from sound reflections. Since we began studying it in humans, we have learned several things. First, most humans can echolocate to some degree. READ MORE

5. Mind your Language, All Right? Performance-dependent neural patterns of language
Abstract : The main aim of this dissertation was to investigate the difference in neural language patternsrelated to language ability in healthy adults. The focus lies on unraveling the contributions of theright‐hemispheric homologues to Broca’s area in the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and Wernicke’s areain the posterior temporal and inferior parietal lobes.
