  1. 1. Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome : a disorder of cholesterol synthesis : diagnosis, treatment and pathogenetic aspects

    Author : Lena Starck; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome; cholesterol; cholesterol treatment; dehydrocholesterols; lathosterol; oxysterols; blood paper specimens; simvastatin; clinical scoring.;

    Abstract : In 1993 it was first suggested that the Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS), described almost 30 years earlier as a malformation syndrome, is caused by defective synthesis of cholesterol. Hypocholesterolaemia and accumulation of the immediate precursor 7-dehydrocholesterol was consistent with deficient activity of the enzyme in the last step of the synthesis, 7-dehydrocholesterol-7-reductase. 2. 2. Gallstone disease in a Swedish population : an epidemiological investigation

    Author : Olle Muhrbeck; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cholelithiasis; cholecystectomy; cholesterol; epidemiologySweden; incidence; lathosterol; mass screening; prevalence; risk factors; symptoms; ultrasonography; 7-a-hydroxy-4-cholesten-3-one;

    Abstract : The main objective of the present thesis was to study the prevalence of gallstone disease in a community survey in Danderyd. Symptoms and risk factors for gallstone disease and the changing incidence of cholecystectomy in Stockholm County was also studied. READ MORE

  3. 3. On the regulation of hepatic cholesterol and bile acid metabolism in gallstone patients

    Author : Carl-Gustaf Hillebrant; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Bile acid synthesis; biliary lipids; cholesterol synthesis; cholesterol 7a-hydroxylase; cholesterol synthesis inhibitor; chenodeoxycholic acid; cholestyramine; 7a-hydroxy-4-cholesten-3-one; HMG CoA reductase; lathosterol; lipoproteins; lithocholic acid; plasma apheresis; ursodeoxycholic acid;

    Abstract : The liver plays an important role in the regulation of cholesterol homeostasis, therefore also in the pathogenesis of arteriosclerosis and gallstone disease. The quantitatively most important way by which cholesterol is removed from the human body is via the bile, either as free cholesterol or after transformation to bile acids. READ MORE

  4. 4. Statin treatment and beta-Amyloid Production in Patients with Alzheimer s Disease

    Author : Kina Höglund; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Alzheimer s disease; amyloid precursor protein; beta-amyloid; cholesterol; statins; CSF;

    Abstract : Alzheimer s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder pathologically characterized by neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques. According to the amyloid cascade hypothesis, the increased production of beta-amyloid (Abeta), derived form the amyloid precursor protein (APP), and its aggregation into plaques are key pathological events, driving neurodegeneration in AD. 5. 5. 24s-Hydroxycholesterol : studies on regulatory mechanisms behind its formation in the brain and its potential use as a marker for neurodegeneration

    Author : Marjan Shafaati; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cholesterol 24-hydroxylase (CYP46A1) belongs to the cytochrome P450 super family and is responsible for conversion of cholesterol to the oxysterol 24S- hydroxycholesterol (24S-OHC). This structural modification allows 24S-OHC to traverse the blood brain barrier and this pathway is the major one for elimination of cholesterol from the mammalian brain. READ MORE
