  1. 1. The role of biobased building materials in the climate impacts of construction : Effects of increased use of biobased materials in the Swedish building sector

    Author : Diego Peñaloza; Magnus Wålinder; Martin Erlandsson; Andreas Falk; Johanna Berlin; Dimitris Athanassiadis; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; LCA; timber buildings; timber bridges; biobased building materials; dynamic LCA; climate change mitigation; building stock; scenario analysis; biogenic carbon; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering;

    Abstract : A significant share of the global climate change impacts can be attributed to the construction sector. One mitigation strategy is increasing the use of biobased materials. Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been used to demonstrate the benefits of this, but forest complexities create uncertainty due to omission of key aspects. READ MORE

  2. 2. An analysis of architectural and urban planning strategies for developing energy efficient cities in China

    Author : Zhenhong Gu; Fredrik Gröndahl; Dong Wei; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Energy efficiency; Nanjing; China; urban planning; passive house; low exergy system; Building Environmental Assessment; LCA; Swedish housing; Hammarby Sjöstad; eco-village; game theory; systems theory; soft systems methodology; Industrial Ecology; Industriell ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis presents a detailed analysis of architecture and urban planning strategies for developingenergy-efficient cities in a Chinese context. The overall aim of the work is to examine how Chineseurbanisation and city construction can be improved from an energy-saving perspective. READ MORE

  3. 3. Robust and Durable Vacuum Insulation Technology for Buildings

    Abstract : Today’s buildings are responsible for 40% of the world’s energy use and also a substantial share of the Global Warming Potential (GWP). In Sweden, about 21% of the energy use can be related to the heat losses through the climatic envelope. READ MORE

  4. 4. Environmental Assessment of Buildings and the influence on architectural design

    Author : Marita Wallhagen; Göran Finnveden; Mauritz Glaumann; Tove Malmqvist; Ole Jörgen Hanssen; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; green building; sustainable building; environmental assessment; assessment tool; architectural design; CO2 Carbondioxide ; Civil engineering and architecture; Samhällsbyggnadsteknik och arkitektur;

    Abstract : This licentiate thesis examines environmental assessment tools for buildings. This is done by investigating, analysing, comparing and testing how different environmental assessment tools measure the environmental performance of buildings and examining the consequences this may have on architectural design. Author : Magnus Larsson; Magnus Wålinder; Andreas Falk; Olga Popovic Larsen; KTH; []
    Keywords : Building materials; multi-objective optimisation; genetic algorithms; evolutionary architecture; material phase transitions; generative LCA; parametric epistemic things; presilience; postponism; anticipation; adaptation; simulation; Grasshopper; Byggnadsmaterial; flermålsop2mering; gene2ska algoritmer; evolu2onär arkitektur; materialbaserade fasövergångar; genera2v LCA; parametriska epistemiska 2ng; presiliens; postponism; antecipa2on; adap2on; simulering; Grasshopper; Building Materials; Byggnadsmaterial;

    Abstract : This thesis is an investigation into how meta-heuristic multi-objective optimisation processes (genetic algorithms driven by evolutionary solvers) can bring about materials-related advantages in architectural performance. It redefines the architect’s and engineer’s role from being designers of a singular space or structure to being designers of entire species of spaces, and discusses a particular method – anticipatory adaptive assemblages (AAA) – that allows such processes to produce many generations of design iterations that eventually yield individuals optimised for a set of predefined objectives.
