1. On the Versatility of Microwave-Assisted Chemistry : Exemplified by Applications in Medicinal Chemistry, Heterocyclic Chemistry and Biochemistry
Abstract : Today, the demand for speed in drug discovery is constantly increasing, particularly in the iterative processes of hit validation and expansion and lead optimization. Irradiation with microwaves (MWs) has been applied in the area of organic synthesis to accelerate chemical reactions and to facilitate the generation of new chemical entities since 1986. READ MORE

2. (Photo)electrochemical Water Oxidation: From Catalysis to Functional Device
Abstract : The key challenge within artificial photosynthesis is achieving efficient electro- or photo-driven water oxidation catalysis, a necessary process to supply the protons for the reduction reactions, thereby enabling solar fuel production. To facilitate efficient water (photo)electrolysis for solar fuel production, this thesis focuses on two aspects: 1) elucidating the O-O bond formation mechanism and developing efficient, stable, and economical water oxidation catalysts (WOCs); 2) exploring stable, low-cost, light-absorbing photoanode materials that have suitable band structures and excellent charge diffusion properties. 3. Design of Cellulose-based Materials by Supramolecular Assemblies
Abstract : Due to climate change and plastic pollution, there is an increasing demand for bio-based materials with similar properties to those of common plastics yet biodegradable. In this respect, cellulose is a strong candidate that is already being refined on a large industrial scale, but the properties differ significantly from those of common plastics in terms of shapeability and water-resilience. 4. Fate of Trace Elements in Thermochemical Conversion of Waste Fuels Using Oxygen Carriers
Abstract : The metals zinc, copper and lead are amongst the more abundant trace elements in waste fuels. The fate of these elements is important to study because they can affect the thermochemical conversion process and end up in ashes. READ MORE

5. Development of metal hydride surface structures for high power NiMH batteries : Also extended cycle-life and lead to more effective recycling methods
Abstract : By combining alkaline etching of hydrogen storage alloys or their hydrides with a controlled oxidation, it was possible to improve reaction kinetics and accelerate activation of MH-electrodes. Both AB5 and AB2 alloys were studied where A is mixtures of rare earth elements for AB5 alloys and titanium and/or vanadium, zirconium for AB2 alloys; nickel contributes the major part of B. READ MORE
