  1. 1. Left ventricular hypertrophy and the insulin resistance syndrome

    Author : Johan Sundström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Left ventricular hypertrophy; insulin; glucose; lipids; mortality; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Geriatrics; geriatrik;

    Abstract : Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and the insulin resistance syndrome are common conditions associated with a markedly increased cardiovascular risk. In a fairly large prospective longitudinal study of men from the general population, we found that an unfavorable serum fatty acid profile and components of the insulin resistance syndrome such as dyslipidemia, obesity and hypertension at age 50 predicted the prevalence of LVH at age 70. 2. 2. Studies on malignant ventricular tachyarrhythmias and their treatment with an implantable defibrillator

    Author : Bengt Sandstedt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Implantable cardioverter defibrillator; ventricular fibrillation; ventricular tachycardia; predischarge test; defibrillation threshold; discrimination; electrogram morphology; aortic stenosis; hypertrophy; noradrenalin;

    Abstract : Aims: To investigate the hemodynamic, metabolic and autonomic effects of ventricular fibrillation per se during maintained circulation. To study the defibrillation threshold (DFT) and efficacy of a new and thinner ICD lead (DSP) compared with the standard lead (C). READ MORE

  3. 3. Diastolic heart function in hypertension-induced left ventricular hypertrophy

    Author : Richard Müller-Brunotte; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Hypertension; left ventricular hypertrophy; diastolic function; myocardial fibrosis; angiotensin II; echocardiography;

    Abstract : Hypertensive left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy is an independent strong risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. An abnormal diastolic relaxation in the absence of systolic impairment is often seen in patients with hypertension, whether LV hypertrophy is present or not. READ MORE

  4. 4. Lung Emphysema & Cardiac Function

    Author : Kirsten Jörgensen; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : emphysema; hemodynamics; ventricular end-diastolic volumes; lung volume reduction; ventricular function; transoesophageal echocardiography; magnetic resonance imaging; diastole; simendan; hypertrophy;

    Abstract : Patients with severe lung emphysema have poor quality of life because of impaired lung function and reduced exercise tolerance. Concomitant heart disease in severe emphysema is well recognised. The prevailing view is that mainly the right side of the heart is involved, while the issue of left ventricular (LV) involvement is less studied. READ MORE

  5. 5. Mitral Ring Motion in Assessment of Left Ventricular Function

    Author : Birger Wandt; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The motion of the mitral ring was studied with M-mode echocardiography using the apical four- and two-chamber views.With the purpose of obtaining adequate reference materials for mitral ring motion, 70 healthy subjects were studied. READ MORE
