  1. 21. Rational and Combinatorial Engineering of Affinity Proteins Towards Therapeutical Applications

    Author : Johan Seijsing; Torbjörn Gräslund; Uhlén Mathias; Inger Sandlie; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; neonatal Fc receptor; FcRn; affibody molecule; immunoglobulin G IgG ; serum albumin SA ; albumin binding domain ABD ; half-life extension; blocking; autoimmune disease; pH-dependence; GAD67; GAD-1; gene therapy; Parkinson’s disease; zinc finger based artificial transcription factor; Biotechnology; Bioteknologi;

    Abstract : Protein engineering has had an immense impact on the development of biological drugs, including replacement therapies with engineered versions of insulin or factor VIII to treat diabetes or bleeding disorders, and monoclonal antibodies to treat cancer and various other malignancies. Now, with the next generation of treatment modalities coming up, including monoclonal reagents based on alternative scaffolds, gene and cell therapies, the importance of protein engineering to tailor-make these treatments is likely to increase further. 2. 22. Methods to Prepare DNA for Efficient Massive Sequencing

    Author : Sverker Lundin; Joakim Lundeberg; Harold Swerdlow; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; DNA; Massive sequencing; Next Generation Sequencing; Library Preparation; Barcoding; Multiplexing;

    Abstract : Massive sequencing has transformed the field of genome biology due to the continuous introduction and evolution of new methods. In recent years, the technologies available to read through genomes have undergone an unprecedented rate of development in terms of cost-reduction. READ MORE

  3. 23. Image processing on optimal volume sampling lattices : Thinking outside the box

    Author : Elisabeth Schold Linnér; Robin Strand; Ewert Bengtsson; Alexandre Falcão; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; BCC; FCC; aliasing; distance transform; segmentation; Computerized Image Processing; Datoriserad bildbehandling;

    Abstract : This thesis summarizes a series of studies of how image quality is affected by the choice of sampling pattern in 3D. Our comparison includes the Cartesian cubic (CC) lattice, the body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice, and the face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice. READ MORE

  4. 24. Generation and evolution of human antibody repertoires

    Author : Helena Persson; Institutionen för immunteknologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; specificity; Immunology; serology; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi; Biotechnology; Bioteknik; phage display; IgE; hapten; grass pollen allergen; diversity; antibody repertoire; antibody library; antibody evolution; affinity maturation; allergy;

    Abstract : This thesis, which is based on five original papers, covers different aspects of antibody specificity and diversity, with the overall goal to understand the makeup of antibody repertoires and their functionality as they occur in vivo or as they are developed in the laboratory. Besides their importance in the adaptive immune response, antibodies have emerged as an invaluable tool in applications ranging from basic research to disease diagnostics and therapy. READ MORE

  5. 25. A strategy to identify novel antimicrobial compounds : a bioinformatics and HTS approach

    Author : Sara Garbom; Hans Wolf-Watz; Dan Andersson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antibiotic resistance; Yersinia; T3SS; virulence associated genes; VagH; HemK PrmC; Release factors; small molecular inhibitors; HTS; Medical microbiology; Medicinsk mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Bacterial infections are again becoming difficult to treat because the microbes are growing increasingly resistant to the antibiotics in use today. The need for novel antimicrobial compounds is urgent and to achieve this new targets are crucial. In this thesis we present a strategy for identification of such targets via a bioinformatics approach. READ MORE
