  1. 11. Distribution Patterns and Metapopulation Dynamics of Epiphytic Mosses and Lichens

    Author : Tord Snäll; Håkan Rydin; Johan Ehrlén; Christine Ray; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; plant; metapopulation; model; parameterization; connectivity; dispersal; colonization; extinction; epiphytic; bryophyte; lichen; boreal; fragmentation; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the relative importance of local conditions, dispersal and dynamics of the trees on epiphyte distribution patterns and colonization-extinction dynamics. Study species are the mosses Orthotrichum speciosum and O. obtusifolium, and the red-listed Neckera pennata. READ MORE

  2. 12. Plants go with the flow : predicting spatial distribution of plant species in the boreal forest

    Author : Ursula Zinko; Christer Nilsson; Håkan Rydin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; boreal forest; vascular plant; species richness; wetness index; soil pH; bryophyte; lichen; substrate; stand age; plot size; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : The main objectives of this thesis are to study if a topographic wetness index (TWI) could be used as a tool for predicting the spatial distribution of vascular plant species richness in the boreal forest as well as to study congruence in species richness between vascular plants, liverworts, mosses and lichens. A wetness index ln(a/tanβ) based on topography was used to assign a specific TWI-value to every 20 x 20m grid in two 25 km2 boreal forest landscapes (differing in average soil pH) in northern Sweden. 3. 13. Diagnostic aspects of skin cancer and lichen sclerosus studied with laser scanning microscopy

    Author : Despoina Kantere; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; skin cancer; lichen sclerosus; reflactance confocal microscopy; multiphoton microscopy;

    Abstract : Histopathologic examination of tissue biopsies is the current gold standard for the diagnosis of dermatological problems. Similarly, in oncology, sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is the state-of-the-art diagnostic method for me- tastasis screening. READ MORE

  4. 14. Oral contact allergy to carvone : with a focus on oral lichen

    Author : Liv Kroona; Malmö universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Avhandlingen undersöker karvon (l-karvon), ett mintsmakandearomämne, och hur kontaktallergi mot karvon yttrar sig. Karvonfinns framför allt i grönmynta/spearmint, men aromämnet kan ävenframställas ur limonen, ett citrondoftande parfymämne. READ MORE

  5. 15. Epiphytic lichen responses to nitrogen deposition

    Author : Otilia Johansson; Kristin Palmqvist; Johan Olofsson; Annika Nordin; Lars E Ericson; Peter Crittenden; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lichens; air pollution; nitrogen deposition; phosphorus; growth; chlorophyll a; boreal forest; field experiment; irrigation; carbon based secondary compounds; Lavar; luftföroreningar; alg; svamp; kväve; fosfor; skog; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestrisk ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : Nitrogen (N) deposition has increased globally over the last 150 years and further increase is predicted for the future. Nitrogen is an important nutrient for lichens, involved in many processes in both photobiont and mycobiont.  However, N can be a stressor, causing many lichens and lichen communities to disappear with increased deposition.
