1. Incident Light Fields
Abstract : Image based lighting, (IBL), is a computer graphics technique for creating photorealistic renderings of synthetic objects such that they can be placed into real world scenes. IBL has been widely recognized and is today used in commercial production pipelines. However, the current techniques only use illumination captured at a single point in space. READ MORE

2. Celestial Orientation in Dim Light
Abstract : The polarization pattern of skylight offers many animals a reference for visual compass orientation. In those cases when this optical compass is identified, the receptors involved are often confined to a small part of an eye built predominantly for other visual tasks. READ MORE

3. Light, stress and herbivory : from photoprotection to trophic interactions using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model organism
Abstract : Photosynthesis is the most important process for nearly all life on earth. Photosynthetic organisms capture and transfer light energy from the sun into chemical energy which in turn provides a resource base for heterotrophic organisms. Natural light regimes are irregular and vary over magnitudes. READ MORE

4. Year-round production of forest seedlings under LED lamps : Biological and energetic implications of indoor cultivation
Abstract : Year-round cultivation of forest seedlings under light emitting diodes (LED) is a technology receiving increased attention from nurseries in the boreal forest regions. In these areas, the climate is characterized by strong seasonal fluctuations, resulting in short vegetation periods with narrow time windows for seedling transplanting and outdoor growth. READ MORE

5. The Light-up Probe
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis concerns the development of light-up probes and their potential applications in PCR based molecular diagnostics. The light-up probe is a nucleic acid analog (here PNA) oligomer linked to an asymmetric cyanine dye (here thiazole orange) and it combines the excellent hybridization properties of PNA with the large fluorescence enhancement of the dye upon binding to DNA.
