  1. 21. Ammonia-Oxidising Bacteria in Soil : Studies of diversity and abundance using 16S rRNA gene analysis

    Author : Anna Hermansson; Janet Jansson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Nitrification is the process whereby ammonia is oxidised to nitrate. The first step of this process is carried out by the chemoautotrophic, ammonia-oxidising bacteria (AOB), which convert ammonia to nitrite. READ MORE

  2. 22. Acidification trends in Swedish lakes : an assessment of past water chemistry conditions using lake sediments

    Author : Tom Korsman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Palaeolimnology; acidification history; alkalization; acid deposition; land-use; lake sediments; near infrared spectroscopy; diatoms; multivariate calibration; Sweden;

    Abstract : This thesis presents temporal perspectives of lake acidification in Sweden. Sediment records have been used to study timing, trends and causes of acidification, and two different techniques for assessing past lake-water acidity are presented. READ MORE

  3. 23. Geochemical and hydrological aspects of interactions between water and mine waste

    Author : Elena Shcherbakova; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Geology; Tillämpad geologi;

    Abstract : This thesis presents laboratory studies of sulphidic mine tailings remediated by flooding, and a pilot-scale study of dry cover for remediation of unoxidised sulphide-rich tailings. At the Kristineberg Zn-Cu mine in northern Sweden, sulphide-rich, poorly buffered tailings have been deposited in five impoundments located along a valley. READ MORE

  4. 24. Bivalve shells as environmental archives

    Author : Elena Dunca; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Historical Geology and Paleontology; historisk geologi och paleontologi;

    Abstract : Bivalves can be used as environmental biomonitors by studying the growth rate and the structure of their shells, as well as by analysing elemental distribution in the shells. Information about water chemistry, temperature and pH, about precipitation, food supply and other environmental parameters are stored in the bivalve shells. READ MORE

  5. 25. What are the effects of natural versus human-caused acidity on stream species diversity and ecosystem functioning?

    Author : Zlatko Petrin; Björn Malmqvist; Steve J. Ormerod; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; acid rain; aquatic insects; biodiversity; ecosystem function; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Human activities have caused acidification of freshwater systems on a large scale resulting in reduced species diversity and ecological functioning in many lakes and streams. However, many naturally acidic freshwater systems have also been found, for instance in northern Sweden. READ MORE
