  1. 1. Studies on the Life Cycles of Akinete Forming Cyanobacteria

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Irene Karlsson Elfgren; Kurt Pettersson; Peter Blomqvist; Tore Lindholm; [2003]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; limnology; akinete; germination; recruitment; Biologi; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : Cyanobacteria which can form resting cells (in this case akinetes) are common in meso-eutrophic lakes in temperate regions, often dominating the phytoplankton communities during summer. The life cycles of akinete-forming cyanobacteria has been studied with Gloeotrichia echinulata as a model organism. READ MORE

  2. 2. Greenhouse Gas Dynamics in Ice-covered Lakes Across Spatial and Temporal Scales

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Blaize Amber Denfeld; Gesa Weyhenmeyer; Kimberly Wickland; [2016]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; carbon cycle; climate change; cryosphere; carbon dioxide; methane; lakes; winter limnology; methane oxidation; nutrients; catchment; Limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : Lakes play a major role in the global carbon (C) cycle, despite making up a small area of earth’s surface. Lakes receive, transport and process sizable amounts of C, emitting a substantial amount of the greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), into the atmosphere. READ MORE

  3. 3. Combining limnology and paleolimnology a refined understanding of environmental sediment signal formation in a varved lake

    University dissertation from Umeå : Umeå University

    Author : Dominique Béatrice Maier; Christian Bigler; Sebastian Diehl; Jasmine E. Saros; [2017]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; varved lake sediments; diatom sediment signal formation; sequential sediment trap; seasonal process timing; ice thinning; varve compaction; climate impact; catchment properties; Earth Sciences with Specialization Environmental Analysis; geovetenskap med inriktning mot miljöanalys;

    Abstract : Paleoclimatic archives, such as lake sediments, extend our understanding of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem dynamics in relation to climate variability beyond the period covered by instrumental data. In this context, annually laminated (i.e. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effects of solar radiation on the abiotic and bacterially mediated carbon flux in aquatic ecosystems

    University dissertation from Department of Ecology, Lund University

    Author : Alexandre Magno Anesio; [2000]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bacteria; dissolved inorganic carbon DIC ; bioavailability; aquatic macrophytes; photooxidation; detritus decomposition; Ultraviolet radiation; dissolved organic carbon DOC ; fungi; Hydrobiology; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : In this Thesis, I studied some of the current aspects of organic matter photochemistry. I analyzed abiotic phototransformations of several types of dissolved (DOM) and particulate organic matter (POM). I also evaluated the effects of phototransformation of several types of DOM on bacteria. READ MORE
