  1. 1. Misclassification Probabilities through Edgeworth-type Expansion for the Distribution of the Maximum Likelihood based Discriminant Function

    Author : Emelyne Umunoza Gasana; Martin Singull; Dietrich von Rosen; Xiangfeng Yang; Stepan Mazur; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cumulants of discriminant function; Edgeworth-type expansion; Linear discriminant analysis; Misclassification errors;

    Abstract : This thesis covers misclassification probabilities via an Edgeworth-type expansion of the maximum likelihood based discriminant function. When deriving misclassification errors, first the expectation and variance in the population are assumed to be known where the variance is the same across populations and thereafter we consider the case where those parameters are unknown. 2. 2. Topics in polynomial sequences defined by linear recurrences

    Author : INNOCENT NDIKUBWAYO; Boris Shapiro; Rikard Bøgvad; Tamás Forgács; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; recurrence relation; q-discriminant; generating function; polynomial sequence; support; real zeros; matematik; Mathematics;

    Abstract : This licentiate consists of two papers treating polynomial sequences defined by linear recurrences.In paper I, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the reality of all the zeros in a polynomial sequence {P_i} generated by a three-term recurrence relation P_i(x)+ Q_1(x)P_{i-1}(x) +Q_2(x) P_{i-2}(x)=0 with the standard initial conditions P_{0}(x)=1, P_{-1}(x)=0, where Q_1(x) and Q_2(x) are arbitrary real polynomials. 3. 3. Contributions to linear discriminant analysis with applications to growth curves

    Author : Edward Kanuti Ngailo; Martin Singull; Dietrich von Rosen; Anuradha Roy; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns contributions to linear discriminant analysis with applications to growth curves.Firstly, we present the linear discriminant function coefficients in a stochastic representation using random variables from the standard univariate distributions. READ MORE

  4. 4. The density of rational points and invariants of genus one curves

    Author : Manh Hung Tran; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; genus one; discriminant; modular form; Elliptic curve; height; descent; determinantal representation; invariant; rational point; theta function.; determinant method;

    Abstract : The present thesis contains three papers dealing with two arithmetic problems on curves of genus one, which are closely related to elliptic curves. The first problem is to study the density of rational points presented in Papers I and II. READ MORE

  5. 5. Polynomial Sequences Generated by Linear Recurrences : Location and Reality of Zeros

    Author : Innocent Ndikubwayo; Boris Shapiro; Rikard Bögvad; Tamás Forgacs; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; real-rooted polynomials; generating functions; discriminants; Tran s conjecture; Toeplitz matrices; Mathematics; matematik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, we study the problem of location of the zeros of individual polynomials in sequences of polynomials generated by linear recurrence relations.In paper I, we establish the necessary and sufficient conditions that guarantee hyperbolicity of all the polynomials generated by a three-term recurrence of length 2, whose coefficients are arbitrary real polynomials.
