1. Averaged linear energy transfer and other beam quality descriptors inr elation to relative biological effectiveness
Abstract : In radiotherapy with protons, a constant relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of 1.1 is traditionally applied, i.e. protons are assumed to be 10\% more effective than photons in killing cells. READ MORE

2. Biomarkers of ionising radiation relevant to carcinogenesis : Dose, dose rate and LET dependency of the responses
Abstract : A better understanding of the relationship between ionising radiation (IR) dose, dose rate and radiation quality, and the risk of stochastic effects would improve risk extrapolation from atomic bomb survivors’ data. Owing to insufficient statistical power of epidemiological studies to detect excess incidence of cancer following low doses of IR delivered at low dose rates (LDLDR), as typically encountered in most common human exposure scenarios, radiobiological experiments are fundamental to describe the biological effectiveness of LDLDR and to define the underlying molecular mechanisms. 3. Radiobiological investigations of proton and light ion therapy
Abstract : During the last decade, the interest in proton and light ion beam therapy has increased considerably and several new centres are planned around the world. These particles have a large advantage due to their sharp physical dose distributions as compared to conventional radiotherapy beams. READ MORE

4. DNA fragmentation in cultured cells exposed to high linear energy transfer radiation
Abstract : The DNA double-strand break (DSB) is a critical lesion which, if not completely restored, can have serious biological consequences. The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of many severe end-points are closely related to radiation quality, with increased effectiveness at elevated ionization density. READ MORE

5. Radiation-induced apoptosis in human lymphocytes : studies on expression, function and effects of different radiation qualities
Abstract : We are constantly exposed to radiation. Radiation causes damage to our cells. By the removal of damaged and unwanted cells, apoptosis is considered to be one of the most indispensable defence processes for a multi-cellular organism. READ MORE
