  1. 1. NMR diffusion studies on lyotropic liquid crystalline systems

    Author : Greger Orädd; Frank Volke; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Diffusion; pulsed field gradient; liquid crystalline systems; lipid lateral diffusion; cubic phases; peptide-lipid interactions; hydrophobic mismatch; permeability;

    Abstract : The pulsed field gradient fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG-FTNMR) method to measure translational diffusion coefficients in multicomponent systems has been applied to amphiphilic molecules forming liquid crystalline phases.By analyzing the concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficients of water and amphiphile in a micellar system of N,N-dimethyldodecy lamine oxide (DDAO) in water it was possible to conclude that the micelles formed were polydisperse in size and shape. 2. 2. Applications of hydrodynamic forces for membrane chromatography

    Author : Björn Johansson Fast; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Membrane chromatography; FRAP; Protein accumulation; Supported lipid bilayer; Microfluidics; SEEC; Diffusion; Hydrodynamic forces; Label-free;

    Abstract : Membrane proteins are proteins that reside in the cell membrane. Due to their position in the cell membrane, the barrier between the cell interior and exterior, they are vital to cell signaling. Moreover, the presence of membrane proteins in the cell's signaling pathways make membrane proteins important drug targets. READ MORE

  3. 3. Atomistic computer simulations of lipid bilayers

    Author : Jakob Wohlert; Olle Edholm; Siewert-Jan Marrink; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : Computer simulation has become an important tool for the study of biomolecular systems. This thesis deals with molecular dynamics simulations of one-component lipid bilayers, which may serve as models for biological membranes. READ MORE

  4. 4. Dissecting sterol function during clathrin-dependent endocytosis and cytokinesis in Arabidopsis thaliana

    Author : Márcia Frescatada-Rosa; Markus Grebe; Wolfgang Lukowitz; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Arabidopsis; membrane; sterols; cytokinesis; KNOLLE; endocytosis; clathrin; DRP1A; Developmental Biology; miljömedicinsk utvecklingsbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology; molecular cell biology; molekylär cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Sterols are lipid components of eukaryotic membranes. Alterations of membrane sterol composition perturb the execution of cell division, which in diverse eukaryotes can have severe consequences for development of the organism. Partitioning of the cytoplasm during cell division occurs at the final stage of cell division named cytokinesis. READ MORE

  5. 5. Modeling of voltage-gated ion channels

    Author : Pär Bjelkmar; Erik Lindahl; Toby W. Allen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular modeling; Molecular dynamics; Voltage-gating; Ion channels; Protein structure prediction; Chemistry; Kemi; biokemi; inriktning teoretisk kemi; Biochemistry with Emphasis on Theoretical Chemistry;

    Abstract : The recent determination of several crystal structures of voltage-gated ion channels has catalyzed computational efforts of studying these remarkable molecular machines that are able to conduct ions across biological membranes at extremely high rates without compromising the ion selectivity. Starting from the open crystal structures, we have studied the gating mechanism of these channels by molecular modeling techniques. READ MORE
