6. Protein kinases in hormonal regulation of adipocyte metabolism
Abstract : Abstract Along with liver and muscle tissue, adipose tissue helps maintain normal levels of glucose and lipids in the blood and has a very important role when it comes to storing lipids that can provide whole-body energy. After a meal is ingested, adipocytes take up glucose from the circulation and use it as a substrate for synthesis of new fatty acids (FAs) in a process known as de novo fatty acid synthesis, as well as for synthesis of glycerol. 7. Tissue Factor regulation, signaling and functions beyond coagulation with a focus on diabetes
Abstract : Background: Tissue factor (TF) is a 47 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein best known for initiating the coagulation cascade upon binding of its ligand FVIIa. Apart from its physiological role in coagulation, TF and TF/FVIIa signaling has proved to be involved in diseases such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. READ MORE

8. Effects of immunosuppressive drugs on human adipose tissue metabolism
Abstract : The immunosuppressive agents (IAs) rapamycin, cyclosporin A and tacrolimus, as well as glucocorticoids are used to prevent rejection of transplanted organs and to treat autoimmune disorders. Despite their desired action on the immune system, these agents have serious long-term metabolic side-effects, including dyslipidemia and new onset diabetes mellitus after transplantation. READ MORE

9. Metabolic effects of interleukin-6
Abstract : The levels of the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the circulation are positively correlated with indices of obesity and metabolic disturbances. Paradoxically, plasma IL-6 levels increase markedly during prolonged and strenuous exercise, mainly due to increased production and release from working skeletal muscle. READ MORE

10. Microdialysis and Intensive Care. Clinical and experimental studies
Abstract : Microdialysis was used to monitor local concentrations of energy metabolites in different organs, and to study the pharmacokinetics of morphine over the blood-brain barrier in intact and injured brain tissue in conditions treated in the Intensive Care Unit. After major abdominal or thoracoabdominal surgery, postoperative thoracic epidural analgesia resulted in higher glycerol concentrations in the deltoid subcutaneous adipose tissue, implying increased lipolysis, on the third postoperative day as compared to intravenous infusion of morphine, possibly due to a locally increased sympathetic tone.
