  1. 6. INITIATION OF EXPERIMENTAL ACUTE PANCREATITIS AND MODULATION OF INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE

    Author : Jakob B Axelsson; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; nuclear factor kappa B; neutrophils; monocytes; acute pancreatitis; ductal cells; active site-inhibited factor seven; heparan sulfate; lipopolysaccharide; innate immune response;

    Abstract : Heparan sulfate (HS), a substance common in the extracellular matrix on epithelial cells is present in the pancreas, lining the duct lumen. During pathological conditions, we propose that it can be shed from the ECM and bind to receptors on the cell surface, thus triggering an inflammatory response, which if excessive can cause acute pancreatitis (AP). 2. 7. Death mechanisms compromising hippocampal neurogenesis after status epilepticus

    Author : Christine Ekdahl Clementson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; minocycline; lipopolysaccharide; microglia activation; status epilepticus; epilepsy; cysteinyl aspartate-specific proteases; apoptosis; neurogenesis; progenitor cell progeny;

    Abstract : Status epilepticus (SE) leads to neurodegeneration as well as neurogenesis in the adult rat hippocampus. This thesis demonstrates that even if the neurogenic response initially is very pronounced, with a several-fold increase in cell proliferation, the survival of the newly formed neurons is compromised by a death mechanism involving mitochondria-related caspases. 3. 8. Brain Stem Involvement in Immune and Aversive Challenge

    Author : Jakob Paues; Anders Blomqvist; Finn Hallböök; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; lipopolysaccharide; Lithium Chloride; anorexia; aversion; parabrachial; brain stem; melanocortin; CGRP; enkephalin; Neurobiology; Neurobiologi;

    Abstract : Activation of the immune system by e.g. bacteria induces the acute-phase-response and sickness behaviour. The latter encompasses among other things fever, lethargy, anorexia and hyperalgesia. READ MORE

  4. 9. The role of bacterial endotoxin in the immature brain

    Author : Saskia Eklind; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : lipopolysaccharide; hypoxia-ischemia; immature; temperature; cerebral blood flow; blood glucose; inflammation; apoptosis; microarray; preconditioning;

    Abstract : Aim: Epidemiological evidence suggests that infections may increase the vulnerability of the immature brain to further insults. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the role of bacterial endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) on hypoxic-ischemic (HI) injury in the immature rat brain, and to evaluate possible underlying mechanisms of increased sensitivity. 5. 10. Uptake and fate of pathogenic microbes in the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis

    Author : Bodil Hernroth; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mytilus edulis; bivalve; immune response; lipopolysaccharide; LPS; antimicrobial peptide; gamma camera; radiolabelling; Salmonella typhimurium; sanitary safety; public health;

    Abstract : Bivalves, like the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, are filter-feeders and can therefore accumulate high numbers of microbes from the surrounding water. These shellfish are considered the main risk for bringing pathogens from domestic outlets in the sea, back to the community. READ MORE
