  1. 1. Regulation of Lipoprotein Lipase Activity : an In-vitro Study of a Complex and Dynamic System

    Author : Oleg Kovrov; Gunilla Olivecrona; Aivar Lookene; Mikael Larsson; Geesje Dallinga-Thie; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Triglyceride Metabolism; Lipoprotein lipase; Angiopoietin-Like Proteins; Apolipoproteins; Isothermal titration calorimetry; Biochemistry; biokemi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : The progress of human society outpaces our biological evolution, and this brings unexpected health problems. The industrial revolution brought up dramatic changes in nutrition and lifestyle – we are increasingly shifting towards a nutrient-rich Western-patterned diet and to a sedentary lifestyle. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies on lipoprotein metabolism and atherogenesis

    Author : Katharina Slätis; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ApoA1; ApoB; ApoE; atherosclerosis; bile acids; cholic acid; cholesterol; cholesterol absorption; CYP7A1; CYP8B1; dexamethasone; GC-1; PAI-1; thyroid hormone receptor; very low density lipoprotein receptor;

    Abstract : Atherosclerosis is the primary cause of cardiovascular events such as angina pectoris and myocardial infarction, which together with stroke are responsible for around 50% of all deaths in the United States and Europe. Usually atherosclerosis develops over several decades and leads to a progressive narrowing of arterial vessels. READ MORE

  3. 3. Lipoprotein lipase in hemodialysis patients and healthy controls : effects of heparin

    Author : Birgit Näsström; Per-Ola Attman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : dalteparin; dialysis; lipoprotein metabolism; LMWH; LPL; triglycerides; UFH; uremia; medicinsk och fysiologisk kemi; Medical and Physiological Chemistry;

    Abstract : Mortality from cardiovascular disease in patients on chronic hemodialysis (HD) is 10 to 20 times greater than in the general population. One major risk factor is renal dyslipidemia, characterised by an impaired catabolism of triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins with accumulation of atherogenic remnant particles. READ MORE

  4. 4. Endogenous and exogenous factors affecting lipoprotein lipase activity

    Author : Mikael Larsson; Gunilla Olivecrona; Aivar Lookene; Ira Tabas; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; LPL; APOC1; APOC2; APOC3; ANGPTL4; enzyme inactivation; lipoprotein metabolism; triglycerides; fatty acids; hypertriglyceridemia; CVD; small molecule screening; structure-activity relationship; cardiovascular disease; hjärt- och kärlforskning;

    Abstract : Individuals with high levels of plasma triglycerides are at high risk to develop cardiovascular disease (CVD), currently one of the major causes of death worldwide. Recent epidemiological studies show that loss-of-function mutations in the APOC3 gene lower plasma triglyceride levels and reduce the incidence of coronary artery disease. READ MORE

  5. 5. Lipoprotein lipase-unstable on purpose?

    Author : Liyan Zhang; Gunilla Olivecrona; Cecilia Holm; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Biochemistry; Lipoprotein lipase; Apolipoprotein CII; dimerization; monomerization; Molecular chaperones; Biokemi;

    Abstract : Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is a central enzyme in lipid metabolism. It is a non-covalent, homodimeric and N-glycosylated protein, which is regulated in a tissue-specific manner and is dependent on an activator protein, apolipoprotein CII. Dissociation of active LPL dimers to monomers leads to loss of activity. READ MORE
