16. Initiation of alternative pathway of complement, and development of novel liposomal coatings
Abstract : The complement system is a central part of the innate immune system, and is an essential part in recognizing and clearing non/altered-self surfaces in the body. This thesis comprises of projects in which the initiation of the alternative pathway (AP) of complement in the fluid phase as well on various artificial and lipid surfaces has been studied. READ MORE

17. Multiparametric Optical Characterization of Biological Nanoparticles using Evanescent Field Sensing
Abstract : In light of the increasingly realized dependence of many biological functions on nanoscopic supramolecular assemblies, also including novel biotechnological applications, there is a need for advanced analysis methods capable of accurately quantifying different characteristics of these elusive entities. The prime aim of this thesis is the development and utilization of surface-based bioanalytical sensing methods for quantitative characterization of biological nanoparticles. READ MORE

18. Tailormade Surfaces for Extended CE Applications
Abstract : The combination of capillary electrophoresis (CE) and mass spectrometry (MS) constitutes a powerful microanalytical system in the fields of biology, medicine and chemistry. This thesis describes the development of three novel capillary coatings and demonstrates how these extend the utility of CE as a high-efficiency separation technique in protein analysis and biopharmaceutical drug screening. 19. DNA strand exchange and hydrophobic interactions between biomolecules
Abstract : The role of hydrophobic interactions in DNA strand exchange has been studied using fluorescence-labeled DNA oligomers in a FRET assay. Strand exchange was found to be accelerated in the presence of polyethylene glycol, which provides a crowded and hydrophobic environment possibly mimicking that of the catalytically active recombinase-DNA complexes. 20. Development of a targeted Drug Delivery System for treatment of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinom
Abstract : Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death with a 5-year survival of less than 6%. The only potential cure for pancreatic cancer is by surgical removal of the tumor. However, most patients present with an advanced and metastasized disease at the time of diagnosis, leaving only around 15% of patients eligible for surgery. READ MORE
