  1. 1. Endogenous and microbial modulators of inflammation

    Author : Jamie D. Kraft; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Inflammation; Resolution; Specialized pro-resolving mediators; Lipoxins; Neutrophils; Cardiometabolic disease; Next-generation probiotic; Oxygen-tolerance; Faecalibacterium prausnitzii; Desulfovibrio piger; Inter-strain variation;

    Abstract : Cardiometabolic disease is characterized by dysregulated, chronic inflammation, that may result from impaired resolution pathways or alterations in the gut microbiota. Thus, restoring specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) or intestinal bacteria with immunomodulatory properties represent potential therapeutic strategies for patients. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies on the formation of leukotriene C4 and lipoxins from leukotriene A4 in human platelets

    Author : Susanne Tornhamre; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Human platelets lack 5-lipoxygenase activity, but possess enzymatic capacity to transform the unstable epoxide leukotriene (LT)A4 to the potent inflammatory agent LTC4 and lipoxins, a group of trihydroxylated tetraene-containing eicosanoids, which recently have been suggested to have an anti-inflammatory role. A novel pathway for the formation of lipoxin (LX)A4 via platelet lipoxygenation of SS,6R-diHETE and 5S,6S-diHETE, enzymatic/non-enzymatic hydrolysis products of LTA4, was discovered in human platelets. 3. 3. Endothelial cell interactions with neutrophils : studies of adhesion and effects of lipoxygenase metabolites and antirheumatic drugs

    Author : Mikael Heimbürger; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : adhesion; auranofin; endothelium; gold sodium thiomalate; leukotrienes; lipoxins; neutrophils; PPAR; prednisolone;

    Abstract : Inflammation is a process of vital importance in the defence and elimination of microorganisms as well as in the repair of the damaged tissue. However, inadequate or excessive inflammation leads to inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Pro- and anti-inflammatory regulation of β2 integrin signalling in human neutrophils

    Author : Veronika Brodin Patcha; Eva Särndahl; Emmanuelle Caron; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; inflammation; neutrophils; signalling; integrins; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The body is under constant attack from pathogens trying to slip by our immune defence. If the barrier is breached, invading pathogens enter the tissues and cause inflammation. During this process neutrophils, constituting the first line of defence, leave the bloodstream and seek out and kill the invading pathogens. READ MORE

  5. 5. The structural basis for the catalytic specificity of manganese lipoxygenases : 3D structure analysis of the lipoxygenase of Magnaporthe oryzae

    Author : Anneli Wennman; Ernst H. Oliw; Marcia Newcomer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; oxylipin; lipoxygenase; crystal structure; crystallography; HPLC; mass spectrometry; yeast; site-directed mutagenesis; fungi; Biochemical Pharmacology; Biokemisk farmakologi;

    Abstract : Lipoxygenases (LOX) catalyze regio- and stereospecific oxygenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids to hydroperoxides. These hydroperoxides are further metabolized to leukotrienes and lipoxins in mammals, and are involved in asthma and inflammation. LOX of animals and plants contain iron as catalytic metal (FeLOX).
