1. Hydrogen Bonding in Liquid Alcohols
Abstract : Hydrogen bonded (H-bonded) materials, such as water, alcohols, sugars, and even DNA, are extremely important for biology, as well as chemical industry. Alcohols are used as solvents in paints, in perfumes, as cleaners, anti-freezers, or as an alternative to petrol in combustion engines. READ MORE

2. Computer Simulations of Simple Liquids with Tetrahedral Local Order : the Supercooled Liquid, Solids and Phase Transitions
Abstract : The understanding of complex condensed matter systems is an area of intense study. In this thesis, some properties of simple liquids with strong preference for tetrahedral local ordering are explored. These liquids are amenable to supercooling, and give complex crystalline structures on eventual crystallisation. READ MORE

3. Molecular structure and dynamics of liquid water : Simulations complementing experiments
Abstract : Water is abundant on earth and in the atmosphere and the most crucial liquid for life as we know it. It has been subject to rather intense research since more than a century and still holds secrets about its molecular structure and dynamics, particularly in the supercooled state, i. e. the metastable liquid below its melting point. 4. Nanomechanical Studies and Applications of Cantilever Sensors
Abstract : Different aspects of cantilevers to be used as sensors have been studied. Silicon cantilevers have been fabricated and integrated on CMOS chips using low-energy electron beam lithography in order to reduce the irradiation damage to the circuits. The released and integrated cantilevers have been tested and used as mass sensors in air. READ MORE

5. Neural Networks Applications and Electronics Development for Nuclear Fusion Neutron Diagnostics
Abstract : This thesis describes the development of electronic modules for fusion neutron spectroscopy as well as several implementations of artificial neural networks (NN) for neutron diagnostics for the Joint European Torus (JET) experimental reactor in England. The electronics projects include the development of two fast light pulser modules based on Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for the calibration and stability monitoring of two neutron spectrometers (MPRu and TOFOR) at JET.
