1. Theoretical Description of Electronic Transitions in Large Molecular Systems in the Optical and X-Ray Regions
Abstract : The size and conformational complexity of proteins and other large systems represent major challenges for today's methods of quantum chemistry. This thesis is centered around the development of new computational tools to gain molecular-level insight into electronic transitions in such systems. 2. Acupuncture - effects on muscle blood flow and aspects of treatment in the clinicla context
Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to elucidate and investigate psychophysiological aspects and effects of acupuncture and needle stimulation. Within this framework emphasis was directed toward the effects of needle stimulation (acupuncture) on muscle blood flow in the tibialis anterior and trapezius muscles in healthy subjects and patients suffering from chronic muscle pain. 3. New Methods for Chiral Cyanohydrin Synthesis
Abstract : This thesis deals with method development in asymmetric catalysis and specifically syntheses of enantioenriched O-functionalized cyanohydrins. The first part describes the development of a method for the synthesis of O‑alkoxycarbonylated and O-acylated cyanohydrins. READ MORE

4. Aspects of List-of-Two Decoding
Abstract : We study the problem of list decoding with focus on the case when we have a list size limited to two. Under this restriction we derive general lower bounds on the maximum possible size of a list-of-2-decodable code. We study the set of correctable error patterns in an attempt to obtain a characterization. READ MORE

5. Taming of the BEAST
Abstract : Modern communication systems are designed to enable reliable and fast information transfer. Therefore, efficient channel coding and decoding strategies are needed, which guarantee sufficiently low probability of erroneous reception with affordable receiver complexity. READ MORE
