  1. 1. Dead-Ice Under Different Climate Conditions: Processes, Landforms, Sediments and Melt Rates in Iceland and Svalbard

    Author : Anders Schomacker; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; klimatologi; glacier; dead-ice; surge; ice-cored; Little Ice Age; fysisk geografi; Geologi; Geology; Svalbard; Iceland; Sedimentology; cartography; pedology; geomorphology; Sedimentologi; Physical geography; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; climatology;

    Abstract : Modern dead-ice environments in the glacier forefields of Brúarjökull, Iceland and Holmströmbreen, Svalbard were investigated with focus on landform and sediment genesis, as well as quantification of melting. Field monitoring and studies of multi-temporal aerial photographs, satellite imagery, and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) provided data for the melting quantification. READ MORE

  2. 2. Geophysical Applications of Vegetation Modeling

    Author : Jed O Kaplan; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Environmental chemistry; Växtbiokemi; Plant biochemistry; CH4; CO2; stable isotopes; carbon cycle; wetland; ice core; methane; Holocene; mammoths; tundra; ice age; LGM; biogeography; biome; biogeochemistry; Vegetation model; Miljökemi; Physical geography; geomorphology; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the development and selected applications of a global vegetation model, BIOME4. The model is applied to problems in high-latitude vegetation distribution and climate, trace gas production, and isotope biogeochemistry. READ MORE

  3. 3. Holocene climate and atmospheric circulation changes in northern Fennoscandia : Interpretations from lacustrine oxygen isotope records

    Author : Christina E. Jonsson; Gunhild Rosqvist; Jan Seibert; Philip Barker; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; oxygen isotope; diatom silica; lake sediment; atmospheric circulation; North Atlantic Oscillation; northern Fennoscandia; The Holocene; Little Ice Age; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates how variations in the oxygen isotopic composition of lake waters in northern Fennoscandia are recorded in lake sediment archives, especially diatoms, and how these variations can be used to infer past changes in climate and atmospheric circulation. Results from analyses of the oxygen isotopic composition of lake water samples (δ18Olakew) collected between 2001 and 2006 show that δ18O of northern Fennoscandian lakes is mainly controlled by the isotopic composition of the precipitation (δ18Op). 4. 4. Tracing environmental change and human impact as recorded in sediments from coastal areas of the northwestern Baltic Proper

    Author : Lena Norbäck Ivarsson; Elinor Andrén; Thomas Andrén; Mikael Lönn; John Anderson; Södertörns högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Baltic Sea; paleoecology; diatom stratigraphy; stable nitrogen isotopes; hypoxia; nutrient discharge; eutrophication; Medieval Climate Anomaly; Little Ice Age; Environmental Studies; Miljövetenskapliga studier; Östersjö- och Östeuropaforskning; Baltic and East European studies;

    Abstract : The eutrophication of the Baltic Sea due to increased anthropogenic nutrient loads during the 20th century is well documented and studied. However, in the Baltic Sea drainage area, humans have affected the environment longer than the environmental monitoring can provide data for. READ MORE

  5. 5. Effects of Post-Glacial Range Expansions and Population Bottlenecks on Species Richness

    Author : Anders Ödeen; Godfrey Hewitt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Peripatric speciation; bottlenecks; mating asymmetries; Kaneshiro model; Quaternary ice-ages; phylogeny; Motacilla; Motacilla flava; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis relates modern speciation theory to the effects of sudden changes in the range and size of populations. Special reference is made to the climatic oscillations during the Quaternary ice ages. READ MORE
