  1. 21. Ropivacaine and cellular functions : towards an understanding of efficacy in ulcerative colitis

    Author : Titti Martinsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the mucosa of the colon and the disease is characterised by periods of active colonic inflammation, intermitted by periods of remission. Local anaesthetics have been shown to exhibit a wide array of anti inflammatory effects in addition to the reversible block of nerve impulse propagation, and some or maybe all of these may explain the reported beneficial effects of local anaesthetics in ulcerative colitis patients. 2. 22. Bilateral neurogenic mechanisms following acute unilateral inflammation

    Author : Indre Bileviciute-Ljungar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : bilateral changes; host defence reaction; contralateral treatment; dorsal root reflexes; cross-spinal reflexes; substance P; neurokinin A; calcitonin gene-related peptide; neuropeptide Y; nociception; inflammation; carrageenan; edema; hindpaw withdrawal latency; microdialysis; hot-plate test; Randall Selitto test;

    Abstract : The contribution of neurogenic mechanisms to inflammation has been extensively studied during the last decade, but provides no clear understanding of the bilateral changes commonly seen following unilateral stimulation. This work demonstrates that bilateral neurogenic mechanisms are a part of general host defence reactions following acute unilateral challenge, for the first time revealing that local anaesthetics applied contralaterally, might be used for therapeutic purposes in relieving pain and inflammation. 3. 23. Opioids in the management of pain during delivery

    Author : Christina Olofsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Labour pain; systemic opioids; analgesia; epidural; subarachnoid; sufentanll; fentanyl; postpartal urinary retention; caesarean section; cerebrospinal fluid; endogenous pain controlling mechanisms;

    Abstract : Labour and delivery involve severe pain for most women. The goal for pain treatment in obstetrics is to provide effective and safe analgesia during all phases of delivery. The ideal method for pain relief during delivery is not yet available. READ MORE

  4. 24. Pain induced by propofol - clinical studies on drug composition and adminstration

    Author : Elisabeth Liljeroth; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; intravenous; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; pain; propofol; injection;

    Abstract : Over the last 25 years a number of new anaesthetic drugs have been introduced on the market to allow for better patient satisfaction and faster recovery after anaesthesia and sedation. Propofol (2,6-di-isopropylphenol), one of our most common iv anaesthetics, is associated with pleasant sleep and rapid recovery with little postoperative nausea. READ MORE

  5. 25. Application of new technology : MEPS and LC-MS/MS for determination of therapeutic drugs

    Author : Rana Said; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Bioanalysis most often requires an extraction procedure to isolate the target compounds from a complex matrix. The aim of this work was to evaluate microextraction in packed syringe (MEPS) performance as a sample preparation technique by developing new analytical methods for different categories of compounds utilizing MEPS in combination with LC-MS/MS.
