41. Conversion processes for biofuel production
Abstract : Despite the global positive impacts of soybean-, maize- and sugarcane-based (first-generation) liquid biofuels, several drawbacks pertaining to increased use of agricultural land, causing deforestation in some countries and extensive practice of fertilizers have been observed. As a result, developing advanced (second- and third-generation) liquid biofuels have been identified as better alternatives and are considered to be of great importance in the future. READ MORE

42. On the local properties of compressible filter cakes
Abstract : Filtration as a means of separating solids from liquids is an important unit operation employed in a range of different industrial sectors, of which the forest products, mineral, chemical process and pharmaceutical industries are but a few. Accurate and applicable models for the filtration unit operation are imperative if industrial filtration equipment is to be designed correctly. READ MORE

44. Utilization of local bioresources for transport fuels - System analysis for decision support
Abstract : This thesis presents a comprehensive system analysis of the utilization of biowaste and forest industry residues to produce transportation fuels. It explores various aspects such as the constraints to the production system’s value chain development, the utilization of the geographical proximity of biofuel technology innovation system components, environmental impacts, and economic costs. 45. Palaeoenvironmental changes in the northern boreal zone of Finland: local versus regional drivers
Abstract : Multiple proxies derived from the Lake Loitsana sediment sequence (NE Finland) are employed to determine the timing of deglaciation, characterise an early Holocene proglacial lake stage and reconstruct Holocene lake development. Local-scale processes causing shifts in biological assemblages are identified and the most likely Holocene mean July air temperature (Tjul) development is assessed. READ MORE
