  1. 6. Identification of candidate genes involved in Mercury Toxicokinetics and Mercury Induced Autoimmunity

    Author : Hammoudi Alkaissi; Per Hultman; Said Havarinasab; Peter Söderkvist; Jesper Bo Nielsen; Johan Rönnelid; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : BACKGROUND: Autoimmune diseases require the involvement and activation of immune cells and occur when the body builds up an immune response against its own tissues. This process takes place due to the inability to distinguish self-antigen from foreign antigen. Systemic autoimmunity represents an important cause of morbidity and mortality in humans. READ MORE

  2. 7. Genetic association and linkage studies in colorectal cancer

    Author : Susanna von Holst; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Colorectal cancer;

    Abstract : Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer type in the Western world. Over one million patients are diagnosed worldwide yearly. A family history of CRC is a major risk factor for CRC. The total genetic contribution to disease development is estimated to be 35%. READ MORE

    Abstract : This thesis is interdisciplinary between Mathematical Statistics, Genetics, and Medicine. It mainly consists of topics in mathematical modelling of the correlation of inheritance of genes and disease in a family, a method called linkage analysis. It is organized as follows. READ MORE

  4. 9. Hypospadias : gene mapping and candidate gene studied

    Author : Thi Thai Hanh Trinh; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Hypospadias is a common congenital malformation in boys, characterized by incomplete fusion of the urethral folds, abnormal opening of urethra and different degrees of curvature of the penis. In Sweden, the incidence of hypospadias is 1.14 per 300 male live-births according to the annual Swedish Malformation Registry. READ MORE

  5. 10. Investigation of immunological preconditions in MS patients "MS immunopathic trait"

    Author : Sara Haghighi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : multiple sclerosis; siblings; CSF; oligoclonal; cytokine; sulfatide; genetics; trait;

    Abstract : We examined 47 MS patients, 47 healthy siblings and 50 healthy unrelated individuals with blood and CSF analysis and found that 19 % (9/47) of healthy siblings of clinically definite multiple sclerosis patients had an intrathecal immunological reaction to ¡Ý 2 CSF-enriched OCB, in contrast to 4% (2/50) of the unrelated healthy controls. We termed this condition ¡°MS immunopathic trait¡±. READ MORE
